Ricki Goes Out
Yesterday I took a road trip through eastern Iowa to the very edge of the state, ending up at the home of Bad Ash BBQ, Bellevue Iowa on the incredible Mississippi river!
I didn’t take a ton of pictures as this was a personal visit to chat with my dear friend James.
But he was smoking some briskets, and the scent rising out of the Big Johnson made me really hungry
My route back took me thru the lovely town of Maquoketa, Iowa.
As is my custom, I checked out some restaurants in town, chose one I hadn’t been to, and called in a to-go order from the road.
As it turns out I chose wisely as the City Limits Family Restaurant was excellent!
Regular readers will know that I adore diners and small family restaurants, and this one hit the mark!
As I drove up I noticed the full parking lot, always a good sign.
Another indicator of a great small (ish, Pop. 6064) community is that folks were talking with one another in the lot, perhaps exchanging a last few words before driving off, or making plans for their next visit.
And I am certain this restaurant gets plenty of return business!
The place is absolutely clean as a whistle, all of the tables were spotless, the bathroom was sparkling fresh, and the kitchen looked spotless.
The service was also top notch, fast and genuinely down home friendly.
I was greeted instantly, taken care of quickly, and made to feel like family by the one-of-a-kind chef (owner?), whose fabulous mustaches and quirky, affable pii08manner has me smiling even now.
I chose a dish I am very familiar with, the Chicken Philly.
I was surprised when I opened the takeaway box to find half of and Italian loaf, split, buttered, and toasted, topped with a butterflied grilled chicken breast smothered in the usual Philly toppings!
I had to pull off the road to handle this “sandwich”.
After enjoying half of the portion with a knife and fork I was able to somewhat fold it up and eat it like a sandwich.
It was delicious! I love complex sophisticated cuisine, but I have a big soft spot in my heart for home cooking.
I could tell from the first bite that this dish was prepared from simple fresh ingredients with skill and love, exactly why I care so much for smaller individually owned and operated eateries.
The loaf was crusty, buttery and yummy.
The chicken was juicy, tender and delish.
The toppings, grilled onion, pepper and cheese were fantastic and full of flavor.
Perfect‼️
I cannot wait to try their breakfast

A family owned restaurant who take pride in their establishment and in serving their customers. They are extremely courteous and welcoming! Great food with a great menu with a lot of variety options and decent prices. The waitress was very friendly and took care of our tables needs.

Stopped on our way through from Wisconsin. Got the sausage skillet. Was absolutely delicious! Husband got sausage links was very impressed with them. Food portions and price were perfect! Choice between this restaurant and another high rated restaurant in the area but they were pricer so decided to try here. Glad we did. Definitely recommend!

Great family friendly diner! We each got a one egg combo (which ended up being three eggs, three pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of toast and hash browns) for $5.70 per person! More food than we could eat! And all of it cooked perfectly. It was nice to see the small town camaraderie going on around us as well. Definitely worth a stop!

This is a family diner. The burgers were good, especially the city limit burger. Also the Mac n cheese was a hit. However the meatloaf was comically 1/2 inch thin covered in gravy with a hilariously large steak knife on the plate to cut the soft paper thin loaf. The taste was familiar and it took me a moment to realize it was banquet Salisbury steak with the same gravy. The fries are not beer battered they are just frozen crinkle cut and given a choice of salad bar or salad go with the bar because the salad is just a bowl of plain lettuce. I wasn’t satisfied but everyone else enjoyed their food.
It’s a place to eat but get a sandwich.

1st time here. I had the hot beef on mashed potatoes and she had the breaded chicken sandwich with fries. Both were excellent and hot. Portions were huge. Waitress was excellent. Highly recommend. We will be back.

Me and my fiance visited on Valentines day with her parents and had a terrible experience. The waitress didnt look happy but she herself did nothing wrong. I got the shrimp Alfredo ($12 menu price) and there supposedly made in house Alfredo sauce tasted like it Ragu from the jar. In other words not good and kinda bland. There was only 3 shrimp and that wouldn’t have been a problem had it not been had they not charged me an extra $3.95 for a valentines day special that was never advertised to me prior to getting the check. This special was supposedly $3.95 extra for a total of 15.95 and in return you get “extra meat” in your pasta. Keep in mind I only got 3 pieces of shrimp and this “special” was never told to me till I questioned the price when I got the bill. And upon further inspection of my in-laws bi after they paid it was noticed that they got charged $25 for a steak that was advertised on the menu for $14. And after getting over charged the woman at the register asked if I wanted to leave a tip. I did so reluctantly only because it’s not the waitresses fault that the food tucked and the owners up charged our meals without our consent. I feel bad for her and understand why she wasn’t smiling. With “Specials” like these she was probably getting more complaints than tips. Will not be returning and nether will my in-laws. We were not impressed and left us feeling irritated and cheated.

Hands down a great little local place to go eat whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Owner goes around and checks in and greets everyone. Super friendly staff and the food, nothing I haven’t had yet that wasn’t delicious!! Highly recommend

Another hidden gem, our time started with a super waitress Amy who informed us of the days specials and a list of her recommendations. The breakfasts buffet was ending but it all looked delicious. My wife and I had skillets and they were a true 10. One of the Sunday specials was a stir fry and they said they too were outstanding. The hamburger and the baked chicken were also very good. The portions were good for a hungry appetite. The owners were friendly and really would do anything to make experience a reason to comeback.
