I’m a proud New Orleanian, born and raised in the Uptown area, and today I decided to stop by City Donuts to try their fish breakfast. I had tried their donuts before and was curious about the rest of the menu. Unfortunately, what I experienced this Sunday morning was one of the worst customer service encounters I’ve had in a long time.

From the moment I approached the counter, the interaction with the staff — specifically Julio and Dee — was unpleasant. When I politely asked for their names and inquired about the type of fish being served (as I wanted to ensure it was real catfish), Dee became visibly upset and defensive. Instead of simply answering a reasonable question, they refused to give their names and acted as though I was out of line for caring about what I was eating. This is a serious red flag, especially in a city like New Orleans, where many residents have food allergies and where authenticity matters deeply.

When I asked to speak with a manager or owner, I was told no one was available — another troubling sign for any business that cares about accountability.

Despite the attitude, I still placed my order and requested extra butter on the bread, something that should be a simple courtesy. Instead, I was charged for the extra butter, which is outrageous considering butter typically comes on toast by default. As any local knows, we take our food seriously — especially catfish and bread — and that small upcharge felt like a slap in the face.

Then came the food. After waiting over 20 minutes, I received my order only to discover that the fish was not catfish at all. It was clearly swai, a much cheaper substitute. For anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies, this kind of dishonesty is not only misleading — it’s dangerous. On top of that, the food was cold, greasy, and poorly prepared. It was not worth the wait, the price, or the hassle.

As someone who is a major content creator in New Orleans, who actively supports and promotes local businesses, I find it disturbing that a business operating in such a historic and culturally rich neighborhood would deliver such an unprofessional and disappointing experience. You never know who is walking into your establishment — and more importantly, you owe your customers honesty and respect.

I give this business a 1 out of 5 stars, and I do not recommend City Donuts Uptown to anyone looking for authentic food or respectful service. If you’re going to do business in this city, do it with integrity — or don’t do it at all.

First time having glazed beignets. They were good and piping hot. Staff was friendly. I was there at 3AM in middle of week, so they must truly be 24 hours. The coffee was lukewarm but not bad. Looks like they also have a full menu. I will definitely be back.

Absolutely amazing. I bring my kids here and get donuts for my co workers. AD is the best. Great customer service. . Adding on. On today I did drive thru. Lady at the window snatched my card. I just think she was having a bad day

I’m addicted and my DOC (donut of choice) is the chocolate glazed. It was LOVE at first bite. Consistently fresh and delicious, a destination donut worthy of a 10 minute trek from the suburbs. Also noteworthy, their hot plate breakfast selections are AMAZING! Just tried the liver and grits today, finally a replacement for my retired Peppermill (the king is dead, long live the new Breakfast King of NOLA).

Looking for a decent place to eat on a holiday or during odd hours of the night? City Donuts & Café is a great candidate. Cheap options available with a good variety for the menu. Donuts have a different taste than I was used to having growing up, but I still grew to enjoy them.

Customer service was excellent. I took my time and looked at the menu before I ordered and they were very patient and answered all my questions. The food came out in less then 6mins and everything was so hot and fresh. They have a new regular customer. The philly cheesesteak breakfast burrito was everything I was looking for. And the glazed beignets were so warm and flaky.

This place is absolutely horrible! They don’t serve real bacon with your breakfast and you only get a single slice of toast. My eggs were undercooked! However they did re- cook the eggs. The staff here is very friendly but the food is absolutely horrible. I was thinking to get a donut since it was a new donut shop. I did get a donut and it tasted undercooked and rubbery. I did give them a chance. But I won’t be returning!

This is a budget offering for donuts and coffee. The other food did look over priced. But for an 89-cent donut, I’m not expecting the best donut of my life.

I visited in the early morning as a walk-in customer. They were well staffed, and the donut case was well stocked but not overstocked. Two staff members greeted me, and the service was prompt and friendly. The donuts are the standard varieties, like chocolate sprinkles, caramel, eclairs. A little bit on the creative side was chocolate with coconut, but that’s as adventurous an offering as was available. I got a chocolate eclair and a coffee.

The eclair does taste like something I could get at the grocery store, but it’s more convenient than the grocery store. The creme filling did have a nice vanilla flavor, more than the very plain flavor I’m used to. The coffee is decent, as good as I could hope for with a $2 large.

Bright side: this is a convenient location for me (ain’t no grocery stores real close) and it’s 24 hours with ample seating. I know I can get a dependably normal donut and coffee. I can expect good service like I had this morning. A bonus is the cute bag (pictured).

Cons: kinda boring offerings, and the design of the inside is pretty plain. But what are you expecting for, like I said, a convenient, budget donut place?

The Buttermilk Drop is perfection. Tender and silky donut with just the right amount of glazing.
Quick, friendly service.
