Great and Catfish for Breakfast at City Diner in Falls Church – Reddit

One of my favorite things is to get a side of Gyro Meat on my order. So good! Can’t recommend it enough. If you want a real diner, this is the place. Good food, good people and been in the community for decades.
Pork tips over rice just so so—just cannot explain the taste but won’t order that again in the next visit. Egg cheese omelette was salty. The big breakfast was good.
The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly without being rushed or forced. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a regular, even on your first visit. The menu is impressively extensive, offering something for everyone—whether you’re in the mood for breakfast, a burger, seafood, or a classic diner plate. I am going to try their Greek and Italian meals next.
What really sets City Diner apart is its authenticity and heart. It easily outshines the national restaurant chains and fast-food spots nearby (which are more expensive for less quality), both in flavor and experience. Supporting a local business like this feels good because they truly earn it with every plate they serve.
I’m officially adding City Diner to my regular dining rotation. If you love great comfort food and a welcoming atmosphere, this spot deserves to be your next go-to meal stop.
My friend and I opted for the liver and onions and meatloaf platters. You get soup or salad, a baked potato and vegetables.
The liver and onions were excellent. Onions were tender, not caramelized. The meat was very tender and moist with juice rendering. The meatloaf was served with two slices with mushroom gravy. I do recommend offering a tomato sauce option for customers who may prefer that.
Our waitress was very attentive and made our salads which were delivered fresh and perky.
Coffee was a delicious blend. Not too bold…satisfying. I hate coffee that tastes like the bottom of the pot. This was fresh.
All in all a tasty experience and I will be back for breakfast next!
The restaurant’s decor is quite an experience in itself. Stuck in a time warp, it gives off vibes reminiscent of grandma’s antique closet. The eclectic mix of textures is all around—from neon lights to dolls and lighthouses, all interspersed with Christmas-colored seating. It’s a quirky ambiance that some might find charming, while others may find it a bit overwhelming.
Despite the middling food quality, the diner wasn’t hurting for customers. The place had a steady stream of patrons, suggesting a loyal following or a draw for its unique atmosphere.
While we’re unsure if we’ll return, City Diner does offer a distinctive dining experience that’s worth trying at least once. It may not have hit all the right notes for us, but it clearly has its own appeal.
