Never been to this place before but we were looking for a venue with outdoor seating. I was also craving some barbecue as I haven’t had it in a very long time. Decided to invite the in-laws out with us. Mother in law is still a little concerned about COVID so she wanted to at least eat outside. The outdoor seating is uncomfortable metal chairs and metal tables. I wasn’t expecting ultra comfort but the chairs were actually kind of painful to sit on after some time. We were not greeted by any serving staff as apparently this is a self serve establishment. Wasn’t aware of that after looking at the website or reviews. I had to go in and order, get my utensils, my sauces, my drinks, and eventually had to carry my own food out to our table outside. For the prices you would think this would be a full service experience but I digress. The food itself was actually good. Brisket being the best thing on the menu and the chicken probably my least favorite. The ribs are decent but not the best ribs I’ve ever had by any means. Their collard greens and green beans are on point with meat pieces in them. Baked beans also on point with meat mixed in the beans. Salad was fresh. We ended up staying closer to 9pm just munching and chatting so it was getting dark. Since it’s self serve none of the service people even came outside to check on us but I guess they are not expected to. At some point we were basically eating and talking in the dark and I had to go inside and ask someone if they could turn on the lighting outside. They did so promptly but did not apologize or anything. Overall the food was good but service, even basic service or common sense hospitality, was lacking. We ended up paying $145 on our bill for everything (half rack ribs meal, brisket sandwich meal, motherload BBQ platter, drinks, and dessert). I am unsure if I will give this place another try.

City Barbecue is ridiculously good. I ordered brisket, smoked turkey, ribs, mac & cheese, green beans with bacon, Texas toast, and even brisket chili — and every single thing hit.
The meat is insanely smoky, tender, and moist. The brisket alone is worth the trip, the ribs fall apart perfectly, and the smoked turkey is flavorful (not dry, which is rare). Honestly, the meat is so good it doesn’t even need sauce — but they gave me some anyway and it was great.
Sides were just as solid: mac & cheese was creamy, green beans had real bacon flavor, and the Texas toast was perfect for soaking up everything.
This is now officially my go-to spot. No notes. Just really, really good barbecue.

Absolutely delicious I’ve been to other City barbecues on the Southside and wasn’t as impressed as this one. Let me just say the staff was absolutely amazing it was late in the evening and they were very welcoming. Food was amazing and perfectly cooked!… great job guys way to go keep up the good work.. went there again was even better!!!

We love this place. This is our favorite BBQ place in indy. We live in Avon, so that location is our most frequented. We’re retired and usually get our orders as carry out. Every menu item is great and I encourage you to try them all. You’ll find the staff is “on it” and orders are ready when you arrive at the appointed time. With luck, you’ll discover the best kept secret in BBQ, from City BBQ! I won’t tell you what it is, because I don’t want it to be unavailable when I’m ready to order! Trust me, it’s awesome!!!

I happened to pass by City BBQ in Indianapolis earlier today on the way to a dealer meeting and decided to stop in. Right away, Marcelle at the counter made me feel welcome, she handed me a menu and introduced me to Sammy in the kitchen. Next thing I know, Sammy’s offering me a taste: brisket, pulled pork, and BBQ chicken. Every bite was spot on, and the service was so genuine that I promised myself I’d come back after my meeting for a proper dinner.
And I did.
This time I went for the City Sampler, brisket, pulled pork, BBQ chicken, and sausage. Everything was cooked perfectly, smoky and flavorful. I added a side of their corn pudding, which turned out to be a standout, and finished with some warm peach cobbler. To drink, I kept it classic with an Arnold Palmer, sweet tea and lemonade, the perfect pairing for BBQ.
What stood out just as much as the food was the hospitality. Lex, Marcelle, and Sam really went out of their way to make me feel welcome, and that’s the reason I came back the second time.
Great food, great people, and a place I’ll absolutely return to next time I’m in town.

Okay really procy bbq with good portion on the pulled pork but I’m not impressed with meager means on the rib bones. The sauces were pretty average Midwest style. There’s nothing special about this space in fact it’s rather confusing and your left asking yourself a lot of questions and the human at the counter. There’s a trough out there with random bottles of pop that will make you smile playing pull and see what’s in the ice. All and all this is just a Jain q-joint with not that many burnt ends to keep ya coming back and using up all their napkins

I didn’t rate the atmosphere because we’ve never dined in. We always use the call ahead takeout service and have been always pleased with it. Our order is ready when we arrive, and it’s brought out to our car. No need to get out of the car, and the staff is always very pleasant.
