Cider Mill & Fryer Tuck Chicken

Social Profile:

This is Portland’s last Fryer Tuck’s… and it still does things right. Fried chicken cooked fresh to order—crispy, juicy, hot. Jojos that crackle. House dip people dream about. Cider Mill’s fed this neighborhood for 40+ years. Locals call it a dive… but they say it with love. It’s the kind of place where you walk in solo and leave with a crew. Trivia on Tuesdays… karaoke Fridays… blues on weekends. Fireplace. Big plates. Fair prices. Friendly faces. No BS. No rush. Just good food, cold drinks, and a seat that always feels like yours. Come hungry… leave full. Bring friends.

Fried chicken is offered with comfort-food sides in a country-style space with an adjoining bar.

Sweet T
Although the gentleman who served us was INCREDIBLY sweet, we just didn’t love the food. Chicken had a good crisp but had no flavour. Spuds were soggy and tasteless. We were offered no sauces. Floor inside is covered in grease. Total hazard situation. Small free parking lot.

A beacon to our community. After a house fire displaced my partner and I, a neighbor reached out to ask if Cider Mill & Fryer Tuck Chicken could help at all. The owner told us to come by for some food and the patrons even stepped in to crowd gather some needed items and cooking stuff. The caring and warmth of this place will always live within my partner and I and we will be back to say hi from time to time and enjoy a delicious meal! Thank you again for all your help

BTW: The food is amazing! Best coating on the chicken and fries that I ever had! The portions are wonderful and staff are on par to its greatness. Its really wonderful to see this place still in our community.

Hi I’m Dan
I’m not a regular here but my coworker that I drive home basically pays me with a good hot meal on the way home. I love the wedges and the chicken fingers. I’m sure all the staff are great but the times I have been in, the bartender was exceptional. I’m not sure if it Ally or Alli but the service is top notch . The regulars always seem friendly, the place looks smaller on the outside but has a massive fire pit in the outdoor area. Multiple pool tables and can say I will be back. My coworker tricked me and now knows the he will get a ride home from me as long as he trading rides for food

I’m 25 and have had my same ID since I was 18, not once have I ever had my ID turned away at a bar or a store. I came here wanting a simple chicken dinner and a drink after a long and stressful week at work, instead I got told my ID “looked weird” then asked if I work for the OLCC and was told to leave. I guess once my ID expires and I’m issued a new one I’ll come back and give this place another shot and change my review. I respect them wanting to be safe and not get in trouble, but train your staff better on ID checks.

Fryer Tuck’s is one of those places that looks like it’s been here since before Beaverton Hillsdale Highway was paved, and I mean that in the best possible way. We’d been tired of the usual fast-food suspects and this spot had been on our list forever. Reddit came through when I asked for fried chicken ideas in Southwest Portland—Fryer Tuck’s popped up again and again, like a deep-fried beacon of hope.

Finding it is a bit of an Oregon Trail side quest. You’ll hit a weird intersection, take a turn that feels slightly illegal, and suddenly you’re staring at two doors—one says Cider Mill, one says Fryer Tuck’s. Choose wisely, traveler. We went in through the Fryer Tuck’s side and were greeted by an interior that’s part gritty dive, part family relic, part “I bet Anthony Bourdain would have loved this joint.” The fixtures are old, the front counter is clean-ish but not gleaming, and you get the sense that the kitchen has seen a few decades of hot oil and good stories. I won’t lie, I did have a fleeting “how’s that health score looking?” moment, but the smell of fried chicken overruled my hesitation.

We both ordered the chicken strip sandwiches with fries, because apparently we were in a carb-forward mood. When the food came out, each box weighed roughly the same as a bowling ball. As we walked to the car, I heard my husband mutter, “This better be worth the price.” Spoiler alert: it was. Easily. Maybe even double that, if we’re going by square inch and poundage. We opened the boxes to find sandwiches bursting with enough meat to rebuild a chicken. The fries were legit—crispy, salty, endless. The chicken itself had great flavor and seasoning, but was cooked just a touch too long, making it a bit dry. My sandwich needed mayo or some other kind of food lube to smooth things out. Still, that first bite? Fantastic.

Next time, we’ll skip the bread and lettuce (which killed some of the crunch) and order a single meal to split. That’s saying something, because we don’t normally split meals. Fryer Tuck’s is generous like a grandma who doesn’t understand portion control, and the value for what you get is outstanding.

Would I go back? Yeah, absolutely—but next time I’m eating inside so I can admire the 6-foot-tall Sasquatch statue guarding the bar. Fryer Tuck’s is the kind of place where the food outweighs the flaws—literally—and if you can embrace a little grit with your gravy, it’s worth the stop.

I love Fryer Tucks and have been eating here since I was younger and my dad would bring chicken home. The chicken and potatoes have always been the best but they do so much good food. You cant go wrong eating here! The bar has awesome service too. I highly recommend both!

I went here because I had an hour to kill in the area before a meeting.

This place is exactly the kind of aesthetic I look for in a homey dive bar. It’s very cozy yet packed with all sorts of entertainment potential. They have pictures hanging on every inch of the wooden walls a few fire places. It feels like a cabin in the woods.

I went to the to-go part of the restaurant first, it being my first time there and this was where the kitchen with all the chicken is. The man at the counter told me I could order from the lounge and to sit anywhere.

I sat at the bar with a view of behind the bar area and saw many taps and a wide selection of liquor. Once the server, Mercedes, was not busy she promptly came over to me and took my order; I knew what I wanted. She told me it would be about a 15min wait, which I was fine with. It’s nice to have that information!

There were patrons entering every few minutes and she would ask them, “would you like your regular?” Which I love in a home base. She knew everyone and was a very kind host. This is a place you can feel you belong after becoming a regular.

The food came out and it was delicious. It was prepared by people who care about quality bar food, and they deliver.

I would love to come back time and time again, and would recommend anyone to check it out if you are looking for a brief respite from the busy city.

This place has always been on my list for years to try, but I’ve not had the opportunity while visiting Portland as it is a bit further out. I decided to make the stop on a road trip heading to Eugene and I’m so glad I did.

This place has perfected the JoJo’s so that its incredible words can’t describe the taste. I ordered the 3 piece snack box and it was more than enough. The fried chicken alone was fresh and made to order. You will need to wait 20 minutes, if you’re impatient then it’s best you order ahead of time. The skin was crispy, the meat was nice and the fries were crispy outside and soft inside.

The vibe is great here. The folks are very laid back and super friendly. Also the Halloween decor is fun.

Planned a movie night with my sister and binge watched Bridgerton 3rd season. We tend to cook homemade meals but was feeling fried chicken on this lovely Friday and decided to check out this spot. Ordered via phone and was ready in 20-25 minutes for pick up. Got the build your own: 2 chicken thighs, 2 legs and 2 wings. Service was great and they even gave me an extra leg and wing. Pricing is decent and affordable so I’m happy. Chicken tasted delicious and flavor was on point so I’m very happy! This spot does not disappoint. If you’re after fried chicken, definitely try this place. We’re added this to our list of favorite food finds.
