I visited this location Friday night between 9–10 PM. The lobby was already closed, so I proceeded through the drive-thru, which I expected. However, the experience from that point on was completely unacceptable.
The drive-thru area was pitch black. There were no exterior lights on in the back of the building, and the menu board was completely dark and unreadable. I had to turn on my high beams just to see. In a neighborhood already known for safety concerns, this is a serious security issue for customers.
When I pulled to the window, the employee working the drive-thru (a heavyset woman with short hair working closing shift) was leaning out of the window eating chicken. She did not greet me. I greeted her first. She responded while chewing, with crumbs falling and food visibly in her mouth. It was extremely unprofessional and unsanitary.
Since the menu board was broken, I explained I couldn’t see the options. Instead of assisting me by explaining combos or specials, she said, “What you want me to do about that?” I had to physically park, walk to the front of the building, look through the glass at the lobby menu, then get back in my car and re-enter the drive-thru line. No apology. No assistance.
When placing my order, I purchased food for myself and for a homeless individual nearby. I requested hot sauce and was told they only allow one hot sauce per person, despite ordering multiple pieces of chicken. There was no courtesy or flexibility shown.
To make matters worse:
• My biscuit appeared broken or partially damaged and did not have the usual glaze.
• Only mashed potatoes and fries were available as sides, even though other options are listed on the menu.
• The employee was mumbling under her breath and suggested I “get my money back and leave” when I expressed concern.
• There were visible bugs around the drive-thru window area.
The overall experience was rude, unsanitary, and unwelcoming. This location is in an area that is actively being rebuilt and improved, and unfortunately this establishment does not reflect that growth or professionalism.
This store needs:
• Proper exterior lighting for customer safety
• Functional menu boards
• Sanitation training
• Professional customer service retraining
I will be contacting corporate because this experience was unacceptable. Zero stars if I could.

Ordered 5 piece tender combo with fries and high C fruit punch. Also ordered a large Mac n cheese separately. No Mac n cheese and a sweet tea instead of fruit punch. The people in the kitchen were nice and in good spirits . If they’d been as enthusiastic as getting the order right as they were conversing with each other, there’d be no problem.

Three times!!! Thrice!!!! I have come to order food…thrice times I have sat at their speaker and said hello with not a word said in return. FIRE EVERYONE IN THE MFIN BUILDING!!!! I will make it my mission to find you quality staff… had I been able to order food on ANY of my visits… that’s about $100 per trip due to the amount ppl in my family. No excuse for this!

Terrible customer service! After eating some of my food I threw up while eating the food and the food was terrible! The chicken tasted real funny like it wasn’t even chicken. I will never return! Yuck! It should be a shame to call this place Texas Church’s Chicken! I’ve had the real Texas Church’s Chicken when I visited Dallas, TX and it was awesome there. I’m extremely disappointed! Yuck!

Ordered family meal online. Showed up at the correct time. They were out of food completely and offered no refund. Told me to cancel online but no option existed online and the staff was unable to help further. Staff was unhelpful in any resolution, even walked away from me multiple times at counter while I remained polite and respectful. Would not give us a refund and gave us no food. Stole $60 from us.

This Place used to be good! I ordered a 16 piece meal and all of it was Trash! The chicken was cooked in old grease and had a burnt taste. The okra was fried too hard and the Mac n cheese was running lol. I will NEVER spend my money here again! Shut the whole place down!

The whole restaurant is dirty the lady with short hair that’s usually at the window is rude and slow the workers here have no customer service what so ever, the food wait time is ridiculous this place needs better management, updated inspections, and better customer communication skills the lack of this is also tied to no one responding to the speaker through the drive thru which has to mean no one is wearing a headset

Love that Chicken from Popey… whoops mean Church’s. Churches by far is probably my favorite Fried Chicken. All the locations have closed down in the Richmond area so it’s actually been a couple years since I’ve had some. Driving around Newport News for work I know this is location so stopped to grab a small meal. As I’ve always said it’s worth risking my life to grab some! Usually churches is not in the best location and they always seemed a little run-down that’s probably part of the charm. Not a big place it always looks like a flour bomb has gone off in the back, but good eating!. The staff here was super friendly and got my order done pretty quickly. If I was in the area I definitely would stop by again to grab some of that delicious Fried Chicken!

Church’s Chicken is delightful. There is absolutely no sense of urgency any time I’ve ever visited. The chicken is good, but you’re going to wait for it, and you’re going to like the wait.
I don’t know who the franchise owner is, but they should fix the A/C. It can interesting standing in a room with 10~15 other people without cool air.
