The three of us had a great time at Chunky Salsa on Saturday evening. We loved the vibe of the small place. It feels like an authentic hole-in-the-wall kind of place you’d find in Puerto Rico, etc. If you’re looking for a 5-star atmosphere, maybe sheck out another place in town. If you’re looking for delicious food, you should sheck this place out. The birria quesadillas were AMAZING – that crispy cheese shell – I’ll probably be dreaming about it forever. My friend had the birria stir fried rice and loved it as well. The birria grilled cheese was tasty, but we agreed that the quesadilla was better. The chef/owner is an awesome human and we are so glad to have met her.

The staff here are always friendly and the food is delicious. It’s a small place with big flavor. You MUST try the birria — it is so flavorful! Pictured: Shredded Tinga Chicken Tacos & Steak + Chicken Kitchen Sink Burrito + Birria Tacos + Grilled Watermelon

Grilled watermelon was interesting. I’ve never tasted anything like it.

If we hadn’t arrived near 8pm when everywhere else was about to close, we wouldn’t have stayed. But, we decided to give it a shot hoping for the best, but with expectations already low. When we walked in there was a random rack of clothes (?) and the place was so small. When sat, we were greeted by this sign pictured in the attached photos, that so boldly hung right over our table. It made the entire table gasp and laugh uncontrollably. My sister (manager of a restaurant) tried to get us to leave after reading the sign, but others wanted to stay. I was a server for 5 years, and I knew as well as my sister we were in for something interesting.
Our server, who I do not blame at all, was way too young and inexperienced to be handling the front of house by herself. She made multiple mistakes throughout the night including missing sides, wrong orders, food coming out at the wrong time, but she was literally all alone with no manager and no other coworkers, just kitchen staff. I blame the people in charge who let her flounder up there like that without proper training or help.
Our food was mediocre, the least interesting part of the whole trip. Birria tacos were good, quesadilla was good, but the ACP was weird, and included corn mixed in and tortilla chips covering the plate. I got the chilli relleno and it was okay, the batter it was fried in was horrible, but the pepper and cheese inside were edible so i ate around the batter.
Paying $4 for such a small amount of chips and salsa, and then charging a service fee is a wild business move in my opinion, but you do you. I will say the salsa was good, but if it hadn’t been there would’ve literally been zero redeeming qualities here. All in all I do not recommend eating here.
I see the owners are replying to every review up here, so I really hope you read this one and take it to heart. If you spent as much time training your employees and being active in the restaurant as you do sitting on here defending yourself, then maybe you wouldn’t have to put big threatening signs over peoples heads telling them not to complain. I’m not going to complain to the poor 16 year old server and stress her out, because you’ve built a fundamentally bad business. I am going to let you read this review, and that doesn’t mean i’m “complaining later like a pendeja”. It means you deserve a 2 star review, and I think thats generous.

Our server Ingrid was amazing!! Best Mexican food I’ve had since we moved here!! Ingrid was very attentive, friendly and provided great service!! The food was amazing! We got the birria tacos and birria grill cheese. Everything was sensational!! We got alcohol from next door and sat on the bar side and Ingrid was more than willing to serve us on the bar side! She had a great personality and outlook on everything! She definitely made our experience better and we will definitely be back!

A couple of weeks ago I seen a post for Chunky Salsa in one of the local group I’m in for Brunswick County, NC. Let’s just say the post it self wasn’t good at all, but it had well over 25 comments saying the food was amazing and the girls who own it are awesome. Well today myself an my wife had to stop by and check it out ourselves.

Here is my/our review…

The restaurant shares a building with other businesses so the restaurant itself is kinda small but don’t let that fool you. Once you are sitting at a table you don’t feel uncomfortable at all. (Well we didn’t)

The waitress (I’m going to call her Ms. Georgia) was awesome. Her personality was outgoing and fun. She started us off with our drinks & fresh salsa and chips. The chips were just made and the salsa was fresh, you could taste how fresh it was and it was thick.  We had a few questions for her being it was our first time and she had no problem answering nor helping us figure out what we wanted. She told us her 3 favorite items. I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I told her 2 out of her 3 favorites to pick from and surprise me. She had no problem with that and she was excited about it, (I felt like). She decided to go with the Pollo Taco. My wife ordered The kitchen Sink Burrito. (Please see photos) The Pollo Taco was very wonderful, I did ask for some cilantro to put on it & the rice and beans were so good. My wife says her Burrito was  G R E A T  you could taste it was just made and not microwave food.

If you haven’t been I would highly suggest trying it for yourself, for sure!

Also we learned they do other things like Catering, an Ms. Georgia also does some homemade goodies as well. We can’t wait to try those next time we are in town.

Had an awesome dinner. Our Birria Quesadilla, Cowboy dip, and Birria Ramen were all delicious! The only thing better was our server Ingred. Ingredients was one of the best servers we have had in the entire area! We will definitely be back!

My family and I were in town for the RunOIB and decided to order takeout from this restaurant on our last night to make things easier. We were tired from the race and still had plenty of packing to do. Our total came to $195 — $234.46 with DoorDash and tip — and we were very disappointed with what we received, especially after ordering based on the appealing photos online.

We paid $10.99 for three halves of jalapeños that were stuffed only with cream cheese, topped with a bit of melted cheese and hard bacon bits — not even real bacon. The street corn cup, priced at $4.99, was nothing more than canned corn with barely a hint of crema or cotija cheese, and it lacked all the traditional ingredients like verde sauce, lime, or cilantro.

My husband ordered the Arroz Con Pollo for $14.99 and requested no rice since he had already met his carbs for the day. What he received was such a tiny portion it could barely feed a cat — and the chicken tasted like it came straight from a can.

This is just a sample of what we experienced, and we were extremely disappointed given the restaurant’s glowing reviews. I understand that it’s the off-season and times can be tough, but as a family of five, when we spend that kind of money eating out, we expect quality food and honest portions. Sadly, this meal felt like a complete waste, and we left feeling robbed. This restaurant should be ashamed of serving food of this caliber.

The birria tacos oh my gosh! So so so delicious. I’ve been on the hunt for the best birria tacos & I had to drive 10 hours to ocean isle to find em! All the food we ordered was top notch. The rice & beans, whew. Lol so good. Service was really great. Atmosphere was cute & fun. Loved it the fresh flowers on the table. I wish this place was back home in Ohio. I’d go all the time!
I do wish they had a simple children’s menu, but it wasn’t a deal breaker because there’s still so many great menu choices you can just skip the spicy garnishes. My children still loved their meals & devoured it all!
