Such a classic, ol’ reliable spot for authentic Sichuan flavors ️

The soup pot always hits the spot and the generous portion is definitely shareable between two people. When I go with my sister, she and I share one bowl with 5-7 toppings and are STILL full. It’s also fun to check the food you want on the paper check box menu.

What I would recommend first/time goers:
⭐️ flat mung bean jelly noodles
– any meat (beef slices are a fave)
– enoki mushrooms
– any veggie (we like lotus root and napa cabbage)

The spice level is what you make of it! My sister and I usually get less spicy which has a kick but does not make the eating experience impossible — more than sriracha but less spicy than eating a thai chili pepper straight. My fiance gets spicy and I can always have a sip or two of the broth but that’s all ️

Service: The staff were attentive and quick. The cat waiter robot was really cute.

For two people with our own giant bowls each, we got ~6 toppings for around $20 each. I even took some home so I made two meals from mine.

I’ve been here occasionally ever since they first opened and I still love their food to this day! Yesterday, I decided to come here with my roommate because I was craving their Szechuan Edamame after an already stressful week of classes starting again. We came an hour before they closed and got our edamame and their dry pot where we were able to choose what we want to put into it. I absolutely loved everything! The level of spice was exactly what I was craving and it definitely lifted my mood by a lot! I highly recommend ordering off the custom paper menu instead of the regular menu because you get a lot of choices. The service was fine and they don’t really bother or interrupt your time eating and the atmosphere is very casual.

After dining at Chu Shang Spicy in Philadelphia, I can confidently say it’s a culinary gem for anyone craving authentic Sichuan flavors. The moment I walked in, the vibrant decor and the enticing aroma of spices set a welcoming tone.

I tried both the stir fried and soup pot. The heat level was impressive but manageable, making it a perfect dish for spice lovers.

Service was prompt and friendly, with staff eager to share recommendations. If you’re looking for an exciting dining experience in Philly, Chu Shang Spicy is definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for a delightful wave of heat that will leave you craving more!

The food is great, and the service is excellent — very quick and clean. I ordered sup and fried big calamari for dinner, and everything tasted delicious.

Food was really good: despite how insanely spicy it was (I literally started coughing), it was extremely savory, flavorful, and good for the price. The waitress was also really nice and I had a good time here: the robot deserves some praise too lol. 9/10

Recommend: make your own bowl (soup and stir fry)
Good: Peking duck wrap, fried fish fillet.

Be careful the spicy is pretty spicy. If you would normally order medium at other restaurants, I would suggest getting mild here.

The scallops were not worth it in the stir fry but we were impressed that some specialty ingredients like the pig’s blood, pea sprouts, and chanterelle mushrooms were available.

They do cook everything together so some of the leafy greens might be a bit wilted.

The fried fish was nicely crispy but tasted more like breading than fish

Visited this Chinese restaurant in Philly’s Chinatown and had a mixed experience. The ambiance of the place is its standout feature, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. However, the authenticity of the food didn’t quite meet expectations, and the prices felt a bit on the higher side for what was offered. If you’re prioritizing atmosphere over culinary authenticity, it might be worth a visit.

Portion sizes were humongous. We had the make your own mala soup bowl/dry pot. The garlic sauce base in the dry pot was great though not too spicy (I ordered medium).
There was a robot that would bring bowls and plates over to you that was really cute and added to the experience. Good place to try in a very competitive neighborhood with respect to options for great food.

Came at a busy hour so there was a bit long of a wait before we got our food. Other than that, the spicy flavor did taste authentic and the spiciness did meet my expectations. Recommend that if you can’t eat that much spicy, don’t go above medium.

Their Indonesian fried rice had very strong smell of sesame oil, but the dish overall lacked seasoning.
We ordered spicy dry pot but didn’t take picture. It was super salty, we took home and added more steamed veggies with the leftover seasoning. Their grapefruit green tea and lime black tea are also refreshing and served in a very large cup (great for sharing for 2).
