Food was good just that the fried rice was a tad too healthy for our liking. But would definitely recommend this place to someone visiting Singapore.
Love the patio ambience too, definitely come back to try other dishes!
Prawns were fresh and huge but the surprise was the sauce that enhanced the dishes we ordered.
The Lychee Granita dessert was truly refreshing and perfect for ending the meal.
Special shoutout to Eileen’s attentive service and food recommendations, it was a truly enjoyable Saturday lunch.
Chopsuey Cafe at Dempsey Hill has a charming, cozy ambiance and a beautiful setting. The colonial-style decor and lush setting make for a wonderful atmosphere for a meal.
We were looking forward to the creative Chinese/Asian cuisine. We opted for a shared dining experience to sample more of the menu, and the dishes we had were acceptable and unique, though they didn’t quite reach the “fantastic” level we had hoped for, making the premium pricing feel a bit high for the overall quality.
Unfortunately, our visit got off to a truly terrible start with one of the tall staff members. We had two infants (3 and 8 months) and simply asked for a quieter corner in case they got fussy. His reaction was to literally say “huh” and roll his eyes. When I arrived later with my partner and our 8-month-old, and requested a baby chair/booster, the same staff member said, “another huh! One more, walao”—a completely unprofessional attitude that almost made us leave before ordering.
The rest of the staff were courteous and friendly, but the dining floor and kitchen appeared understaffed, which resulted in noticeable delays in food/drink preparation.
In summary, while the atmosphere is lovely and the food is creative, the overall experience was significantly hampered by the very poor attitude of one staff member and the service delays. Given the high price point, the food and service standards need to be more consistent to justify anything above a 3-star rating.
The restaurant is raffles style old world with a contemporary twist.
Floor fans on the verandahs adds that cool air affect for guests
The service was either too much or too little – but was adequate
The outdoor area brilliant and the very stylish interior was beautiful but rather noisy
The food was both good and some dishes a little plain, the satays were not as good expected and lacked spice
The curry beef cheek not hitting the high notes or spice
Other dishes were good and delivered on flavour
The bathrooms were small and the toilet seats broken – lacking attention to the details
The restaurant area fabulous and quite a few options
Chopsuey worth a visit – but chose wisely and ask about the use of nuts – even in the fried rice
Lovely place for food and a casual chat.
