You can tell this isn’t about cutting corners. The food is delicious, satisfying, and thoughtfully made, which makes a huge difference.
And on top of that, the owner, Steve, is great. Friendly, authentic, and clearly invested in both the food and the people. That kind of care shows up in the experience.
Highly recommend.
However, a greeting upon entering and a smile would go a long way
Sorry to bother you while you’re checking TikTok on your phone!
I haven’t been to Chomps in years. At one point they were my favorite sandwich shop ever. After the new owner took over I went twice and then quit going because it was nowhere near as good as when Fish owned it. Lots of locals quit going for awhile, to be honest. It was just immediately much worse.
For some reason, today I decided it would be a good idea to try it again. I got a Veggie Chomp to go. There was a time a Chomps veggie was the best veggie you’ve ever had. But now…well you can see the picture. I took two bites and pitched it.
I didn’t give them one star because they have more than four from a decent number of reviewers so maybe it’s just the veggie sandwich that went downhill. I couldn’t bring myself to give three because that sandwich was almost unfathomably pathetic. If I saw that picture as the owner I would be very embarrassed.
The person at the counter did warn me they were out of sundried tomatoes, but as you can see in the pic it looks like they ran out of everything but avocado spread.
They still use Louis Swiss bread so that’s good. I’ve heard people say the owner tells customers he bakes it in-house. It’s Louis Swiss. You can get those exact same rolls at the City Market in El Jebel. And yes, they are excellent.
Anyway, I hope this compels the owner to step up his game. That place is a shell of what it was 15+ years ago.
The prices are reasonable.
What I didn’t like;
-The offer soup which is why I went there in the first place, and they said they don’t have any today.
– Customer service. The radio was really loud and it was hard to hear the worker taking the order. I asked him to speak up and he smirked and shook his head.
– I asked what the different sandwich sizes looked like and the man taking the order showed me with his fingers. I had to ask to see a sample.
– The girl behind the bar was quiet and wouldn’t look up from her work to make eye contact or say a word to help with the order.
– the restaurant needs some serious decluttering.
