Very good pricing. Very good staff. Hot dogs are very good. Club sandwich is great. Pancakes are great. Burger is good. Bowl of chili was a bit bland, I’ll skip that in the future.

Amazing food and service! Hidden local gem, well worth the stop if you’re in the area. Ordered breakfast and was some of the best we’ve had in a while. Our wait staff was super friendly and prompt with our order and refills. Highly recommend and will come back next time we’re in Salem.

Our family has frequented this establishment for several years. We’ve been loyal customers, regularly spent money, and now we will never return after our most recent visit. While placing our order, the server refused to allow us to make a combo meal for our 10 year old daughter consisting of a kid’s grilled cheese, cup of potato soup, and drink. Instead, she charged us $7.99 for the grilled cheese sandwich (no side was served), $5.49 for the cup of soup, and $3.99 for a fountain drink. Seems excessive!! After all, her meal exceeded the cost of my own by several dollars. Which did not seem accurate or fair. When I questioned the charges at checkout, the server became belligerent and immediately began yelling that she is not in charge of the pricing and to speak to her manager. When the manager came over, he insisted at first that the pricing was correct but later conceded that they usually will offer to make it a kid’s meal priced at $6.99 by substituting the soup for the side of fries and including the drink at no extra charge. While the manager corrected the ticket, their server walked over to where my wife and children were seated, looked them square in the eyes, and said “ask for a different server next time.” Then repeated herself. Had I known this before signing the receipt, I would have retracted my gratuity. I called Chip & Jo’s, spoke to the manager to let them know of the threatening comments made by their employee, and demanded the owner call me to discuss. The owner never called. I gave them over a week to respond. We will absolutely, positively, never give another DIME to this poor excuse for a business.

We tried Chip & Jo’s for the first time, and it was everything we heard about from the excellent service to mouth watering food. We ordered the breakfast and it was outstanding. This place reminds me of the old 70s style restaurant that you don’t find very often anymore. Put this amazing place on your bucket list and you won’t be disappointed. We will definitely be back next time we are in the Salem area.

First time there…very nice staff…hubby ordered the tenderloin with 2 eggs scrambled along with apples and a biscuit….the serving size was very nice for the price and enough to bring home for a second meal…he only wished it had come with white gravy…I had the tuna salad sandwich…unfortunately it tasted like the tubs of tuna salad you get from the grocery store…way to much pickle and mayo for my liking..it came with chips which where the single serving size of Ruffles….we will go back again and try something else…the pancakes others around us ordered were enormous and smelled delicious.
Picture attached of those! Would have given it 5 stars if the tuna salad had been homemade.

The food is not too bad, actually they did have a decent burger and fries the one time we got served. The thing about this place is that there seems to be a “group of regs” that just lingers. I mean, I don’t advocate the choke-n- puke method but I do feel like after the meal and a reasonable amount of time to let the food settle and pay your bill , time to split. After about the 5th refill, yelling at the guy that says I can’t eat another bite and calling the waitress “hon” about 96 times, it’s time to go. Today marks the third time in 2026 we’ve attempted to have lunch here only to find no tables available, just a lot of the same people, sitting in the same place, eating the same thing and bitching about the weather. Maybe one day I will be able to write a glorious review about how great the food and service is, until then, I do not recommend for working people.

Cars tell the story! Well, while exploring Salem and trying to find a place for lunch, we drove past Chip and Jo’s to another restaurant but found not one car in front of the other one so we turned back and decided to stop for lunch because of all the cars outside. It was well worth our visit! The staff was very friendly (“Mamma” was so helpful during this lunch rush), food was well prepared, and Dawn accommodated my request for no bun or fries to be added to chicken salad.
Update – after a week in the area while at a rally we stopped two more times – the very next day we brought a total of 7 others and four days later total 14. Everyone enjoyed their food and also found Crystal was just as helpful and welcoming.

Would definitely go again. Only thing I would change is the non-golden, but instead dark brown pancakes. Service was beyond amazing. Averaged $15 a person before tip.

Whoa.
This is an American diner. Nailed it.
We called in a to-go order for a late dinnertime to pick up on the way home from kiddo dance class. I got the BBQ sandwich, she got the chicken Philly, #1 got a couple pancakes, and #2 got a cheeseburger.
Bangin’. Every one of them.
The BBQ was tasty and moist and I didn’t even use the sauce. The chicken Philly was spot on, tender, and generous. The pancakes were enormous and they both ended up eating half of one mostly without syrup because they were good without it. The cheeseburger had that classic “just one more bite” essence that we couldn’t put down.
The food was ready in less than 10 minutes from the time I called. It was actually so fast that I was nervous about the quality. The hostesses were kind and engaging. And most of the tables were full.
This is an American diner.
We’re honestly stoked to go back and try more.
