It’s not us…it’s you.
And so our relationship with China Shanghai comes to an end. It had been a mutually beneficial one until last night, when they decided to not only leave out a small part of our order, but also to try to gaslight us into believing that burned oblivion is how a particular dish is made.
For openers, they left out the rice with a main dish…not a great thing, since it’s technically half of the meal but ok since we always get an order of fried rice and are willing to take one for the team.
BUT
You cannot convince me that shrimp toast are supposed to be charred and taste like a fireplace grate. Not being neophytes to eating, we called the restaurant to let them know and just wanted a credit to our charge card for the amount.
They countered by asking us if a) we had ever ordered from them before…we had several dates before this one and if we were sensitive would have been offended at their lack of acknowledgement of relationship status (in an open relationship, btw) and b) that this was just how food was cooked.
Monkey brains, though popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found in Washington D.C.
And by monkey brains, I mean blackened shrimp toast which clearly had been tortured due to lack of actionable information they could give.
Mistakes happen, right? But in order for relationships to survive you need communication and to take responsibility for actions. Without these components, cracks happen and breaks are inevitable.
And so, because we refuse to be bullied into eating charcoal as an appetizer, we are walking away strong in our senses of selves and knowing that we will find the right partner for us at when the time is right.
Food is not love. At least, bad food isn’t.

For the past 20 years, this restaurant has been my family’s go-to for the best Chinese takeout. They have the absolute best brown sauce in town. Their crab rangoon is also top notch. The delivery is fast and the customer service is always excellent. Food is always fresh and hot and the meat is great quality and not fatty.

I’ve been coming to this carry-out restaurant for many years now and I can attest to the fact that it is one of my wife’s and my favorites. We would not patronize a restaurant where we weren’t happy with the food and the service. The husband and wife team who are the backbone of this business are always ready to address any special menu needs that I ask for. The portions are wonderful; the price is perfect. Try them; you will like this Chinese food.

The food here always has a fishy taste to it, probably because everything just gets cooked in the same pan with minimal cleaning, but it is always off putting with chicken or pork. They have tasty fried wontons but that’s about it.

The delivery driver tried to OPEN the FRONT DOOR OF MY HOUSE … which is extremely strange behavior!!

after eating here and tasting 5 different dishes im giving this a 2 star because the food was sub par, there was no flavor in 4/5 of the dishes and didnt really taste that well. it would be a 1/5 but the orange chicken at this place was decent and thats why it got a 2 star. i would not really recommend this place if you want a mouthful of flavor.

This restaurant is very decent and close by! The customer service and the delivery is superb. They have really good General Tso! However, their fried rice isn’t the best. It could use some improvement.

I have been going to the little take out for over 20years the food and service was outstanding. Now it’s hit or miss food quilty now is very low. I think maybe they are just tired and maybe lost their passion for putting out an amazing product. Maybe it’s the depressing state of the restaurant period .I Think they need a burst of energy something, First off clean it up, soap and water goes Long way , a fresh coat of paint, my goodness replace the soda machines get the extra stock put away. A new menu sign would work too. I don’t even want to think what the kitchen looks like. I have been a loyal customer they have been like a family to me we have watch our children grow up. So I am sad to say I won’t be coming here anymore. So far I have not found a better place. I do hope owners of China Shanghai read these reviews and take them to heart and be proactive in getting back to pride you once had or close your doors .

Maybe it was the time of day I came in (which should never be an excuse) but this food was terrible and stale . I asked for shrimp fried rice and got warmed up not fried slightly stale yellow rice with shrimp and frozen vegetables. Egg drop soup was gross no flavor. Even the fortune cookie was stale.. it’s a no. Go somewhere else and don’t waste your money.
