The atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The music, lighting and buzz of the restaurant create a really fun dining experience that feels very Melbourne. It’s lively without feeling chaotic.
Service was smooth and attentive throughout the evening, and the staff did a great job guiding the flow of the Feed Me menu. Overall, a great spot for a night out with friends or a special dinner. Would happily come back again.
This Asian themed restaurant has a hippy environment and service staff are very enthusiastic and polite. Service was great and upon us providing feedback that the food served were not warm, they immediately bring them back and ensure our meals are served warm.
Oysters: pretty average I feel. Ok to skip
Yellow curry-spiced fried rice: nice when it’s hot and the flavour is just right. Crab meat is added too to enhance this dish
BBQ lamb: awesome and the meat would drop off easily from the bone when you cut it. It’s well seasoned and we love it very much
We also ordered a few pint of beer and sat at their corner counter seat. The only one feedback is that it was freezing cold at the corner of their bar counter seating. Their big air conditioning fan is positioned in a way to blow at that corner bar counter direction – way too freezing cold. That’s the only downside you need to note.
As for the food, it didn’t taste authentic Asian—which is fine since it’s meant to be “fusion”—but everything was far too sweet for my liking. The only saving grace was the nice ’80s music they played. To be fair, aside from the manager, the other waiters were pleasant and provided good service.
That said, I won’t be returning. Melbourne has no shortage of genuinely good Asian restaurants to choose from.
Chin Chin on Flinders Lane was an absolute win. We turned up on a busy Friday night with no booking and honestly didn’t expect much luck, but the guy at the door was brilliant. Super helpful, genuinely empathetic, and went out of his way to sort us out with a table at short notice. That kind of service immediately puts you in a good mood before you’ve even sat down.
Now the food… wow! The caramelised sticky pork was ridiculous in the best possible way. Crunchy on the outside, beautifully tender in the middle, packed with flavour and just the right level of spice. I genuinely couldn’t stop smiling while eating it and didn’t want the plate to end. One of those dishes you keep thinking about after you’ve left. For me personally, the best dish I’ve had in Melbourne.
The crispy barramundi with green apple salad was also excellent. Fresh, light, and perfectly balanced. The spring rolls deserve their own mention because they were some of the best I’ve ever had: crisp, flavourful, and seriously addictive.
Even my daughter cleaned up her prawn egg noodles, which says a lot.
The atmosphere was buzzing without being overwhelming and was loud enough to feel fun, relaxed enough to enjoy the night. Classic Chin Chin energy, and for good reason. We’ll absolutely be back when we visit Melbourne again.
The place was fully packed, and the ambience was great!
4 stars for the loud music, I couldn’t hear my gf talking to me.
I definitely recommend this place.
My partner and I had been planning to try this restaurant for a long time. We both love Asian fusion, and given Chin Chin’s reputation and higher price point, we were incredibly excited. We booked well in advance for Valentine’s Day thinking it would be the perfect occasion. It turned out to be the complete opposite of what we expected.
When we arrived at 8:30pm (our reservation time), there was a long queue — despite the fact that everyone waiting had reservations. We weren’t seated until around 8:50pm. It really makes you question the purpose of booking in advance if you’re still left waiting 15–20 minutes alongside everyone else.
Once seated, the atmosphere was overwhelming. The music was blasting so loudly that we could barely hear each other speak. We had to practically yell across the table all night, which is the last thing you want on Valentine’s Day.
We selected the “Celebration Feast” at $140 per person, expecting a premium experience to match the price. What followed was nearly three hours of waiting. We ordered around 9:00pm and dessert didn’t arrive until approximately 11:45pm. There was a 20–30 minute gap between every single dish.
While we completely understand that Valentine’s Day is busy, that doesn’t justify the excessive delays. Especially considering the portion sizes were extremely small — three small starters, one medium dish, three small mains, and one dessert. For $140 per person, the portions were underwhelming and did not reflect the price point. Given the lengthy wait times, you would at least hope everything was prepared fresh to perfection, but that wasn’t even the case.
To make matters worse, the table next to us ordered the same banquet and somehow received all of their dishes much earlier and left nearly an hour before us — while we were still waiting on mains. By 9:30–10:00pm, the restaurant had visibly quietened down, yet our food still continued to come out painfully slow.
By the end of the night, we were physically uncomfortable from sitting for so long waiting on tiny portions of food. My lower back was cramping, my legs were numb, and we left feeling frustrated rather than satisfied.
We were genuinely so excited to finally try Chin Chin, and it’s such a shame to say it failed to meet expectations on every level — service, timing, atmosphere, value for money, and overall experience. For a well-known, supposedly high-end Asian fusion restaurant, the customer service and execution on such a major occasion simply didn’t meet the standard.
I would strongly suggest avoiding special occasions here, as you don’t receive the full experience you would expect — especially for the price.
A very disappointing Valentine’s Day.
Ordered the $115 chefa banquet.Food was great except for the braised beef being a bit dry. The kingfish sushimi entre is outstanding. My wife and I didnt enjoy the flavours in the choc panna cotta. The mint or herb infused burnt cherry didnt work, and the addition of olive oil was odd.
Worst part was the service unfortunately…. front out house was a mature male who asked if we had a reservation, looked at the computer and just walked away without saying a word. We followed him assuming he was taking us to our table (correct), to which he pulled out a chair and walked away, once again with no conversation at all. Our first waitress was friendly, however the other one who was servicing our section had a shocking attitude. Most of the other staff were friendly.
On our way out, walked past the front of house guy again as was standing in the front door. Didn’t engage with us at all. As front of house, id expect a simple “enjoy your meal” or “thanks for dining with us, see you next time”. Instead we got attitude.
Not sure we will be in a rush to return to chin chin.
Sadly this is a stark difference compared to previous visits and my previous 5star review.
Restaurant itself was way too loud. Service on the other hand at the bar counter was fast and friendly!
I loved the vibe and atmosphere of the venue and whilst it was busy, it still felt relaxing and welcoming.
I will definitely return when I’m back in Melbourne.
