I had 3 Tacos, the Fish, Pork Belly and chicken. All 3 were excellent and very flavorful. You can tell that everything is made from scratch.
The waitstaff were very friendly and knowledgeable.
I plan to have lunch here again real soon!
The food is so good! Had the vegetarian burrito and my son had the barbacoa beef.
The Cadillac margarita is astonishing!
We started with the Chips & Queso ($6) as our side. The chips came out fresh, and the queso was creamy, flavorful, and just the right kind of indulgent starter. For drinks, I went with the Jarritos Punch ($15) sweet, refreshing, and definitely a fun pick. My wife stuck with water, which Sam kept refilled throughout the meal.
For the main course, I ordered the Gordo Burrito ($21). It was an 11” flour tortilla stuffed with guajillo/lime chicken, refried beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese, smothered in a red sauce, and finished with crema and guacamole. It was hearty, flavorful, and more than satisfying, the perfect comfort dish. My wife went with the 2 Tacos ($13) one with chicken and one with beef. They came topped with cilantro, onion, lime, and cotija cheese on fresh corn tortillas. She really enjoyed them and loved how authentic they tasted.
Overall, we were enjoyed our meal. The food was fresh and flavorful, the service from Sam was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the patio ambiance was just right for a casual night out. Chico’s Tacos and Bar is definitely a spot we’d come back to the next time we’re in Montpelier.
Veteran owned and operated. ✔️
Laid back atmosphere. ✔️
Talked with the owner, Drew, lots of locally sourced beers and produce. Fresh ingredients, good food, fresh tortillas, the list goes on. The burrito, which i believe was $15, I had to get the second half to go it was so big.
Lots of parking, biker friendly, looks like a nice little patio as well.
100% worth the stop, and we plan to be back soon.
Our server Sam was excellent.
The atmosphere is pleasant. Kind of a SouthWest saloon vibe with a pool table in the main dining room, banquets, etc.
The food was good, not great. The Vermont made corn tortillas are tasty, but fall apart easily when eating a taco. Considering the generous amount of fillings and the delicate nature of the flatbread maybe two tortillas per taco is warranted. Or better yet, why not try making your own tortillas?
We had the fish tacos. The fried fish in the tacos was crispy, but had no flavor. The tortillas weren’t warm. I liked the sliced jalapeños and fresh cabbage in the tacos. I also liked the fact that it had grated cojita, but it wasn’t sharp, so it didn’t add anything in terms of flavor. Basically, the tacos could have been more flavorful.
The chips and salsa were meh. I gather they must use the same local Vermont tortillas for the chips, but some tortillas fry better than others, these apparently do not. The chips were served cold, many were broken, greasy, overcooked, and hard. The salsa seemed fresh, nice texture, but again lacked much in the way of flavor.
The menu is meat heavy, it could use more vegetarian and seafood options.
Honestly, having four other Mexican places in town (a popular one right across the street), I was hoping this would be “a horse of a different color” (as Chico’s owner suggested on a recent Facebook post), but this is not that. This is bland, so-so food that lacks spice. Maybe consider hiring some Mexicans?
