10/12/24 around 2pm. As I ate this meal I couldn’t help but take a couple photos with the intent of circling back to review the WORST chicken tender basket I’ve EVER had. I paid $27 for this meal (including 15% tip).
It pains me to write this review, considering how Chicken Shack is a local Detroit chain that, once upon a time, was highly regarded (I guess I missed the boat on the good ole days of the real Chicken Shack).
The chicken had the texture of a chewy sponge, and when lightly squeezed between my fingers, grease just streamed out…gross!
I reluctantly ate just 2 of the tenders, wondering as I chewed the rubbery sponge-textured chicken just how much of the fryer oil would end up in my arteries
After deciding I could not stomach another piece of this oil-impregnated poultry, I moved onto the potatoes.
The potatoes, temperature-wise, were on the cold side of tepid; only the potatoes swimming in the melted butter at the bottom of the tray were moderately warm.
It was apparent these potatoes were cooked that morning or maybe even the day before, topped off with an aggregious amount of butter, and microwaved for 30 seconds before being served.
What can I say about the dinner roll? It was the only item in the meal NOT made by Chicken Shack, and was the only thing I ate entirely! Coincidence?
Overall this was poor value, there wasn’t much (edible) food for the price. However since I could not tolerate this horrible chicken and cold & stale potatoes, it’s hard to say.
A lot of reviewers are mentioning the owner; I don’t believe the owner was there when I placed this take-out order, but frankly when it comes to fried chicken I really don’t care how nice/friendly the owner is. Check all the boxes of properly fried chicken & tasty sides, and you’ll win my business every time. Unfortunately, Chicken Shack fell short and checked NO boxes for me.
To lighten things up I’ll end the review with a joke: Why did the chicken cross the road?
So as not to die in vain by the evil deeds of Chicken Shack!

I’ve ordered from this Chicken Shack restaurant for years and this is by far the worst experience I’ve had. The potatoes were burnt and hard as a rock and chicken bites were as well. They looked like they were double fried. I don’t understand why a cook would consider serving this to a patron. If this isn’t something you would eat, you sure shouldn’t be serving it this way. Horrible. Will not be eating here again – drive the extra miles to the Romeo Plank store.

Always a consistent & pleasant experience. I like ordering online and picking up in store. My kids love the chicken bites and fries, I like the ribs and potatoes. And get the bbq sauce and ranch!

Chicken Shack USED to be the place to get the very best take-out chicken. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. My wife picked up a carry-out order tonight and we were appalled when we opened the container. The chicken breasts were the same size and the chicken legs, the meat was totally overcooked (dry and tasteless) and the coating had a burnt taste. What happened to Chicken Shack???

How chicken shack isn’t a national chain by now, blows my mind. Honestly, I travel for a living. So every thirteen weeks, i’m in a different state, and I can tell you that I have searched high and low in twelve states and counting for broasted chicken, that even closely resembles what chicken shack has to offer.. as far as i’m concerned, chicken shack is undoubtedly the best roasted chicken I have come across in the united states. Thus far.. i truly think with a lot of people moving out of michigan, into the west coast, that one of these owners really needs to take the leap of faith and open up one of these restaurants somewhere like Arizona. There are so many people on the West Coast that absolutely miss Chicken. Shack, it’s absolutely fantastic when you can be 2000 miles away. Come across a michigander, and talk about how much we miss chicken shack. So once a year I make sure I make it home and chicken shack is always the first place I eat when coming home.
It is the one place in Michigan that you can eat and undoubtedly. Even over the years, the food has always remained amazing.

I AM SORRY BUT WAY OVER PRICED. I GOT A DINNER COMBINATION ONE WAS 10 piece chicken bites. I asked the lady. Does it come with a soda? She says, “yes,” so I called my daughter in-law And say, what soda do you want? Then she went back to me and said, what do you want? I said I like to 3 chicken, tender, and I said does the soda come with the meal also, she says no I said but you told me it came with the dinners. “No, I didn’t” So on top of the $16. For 3 pieces of chicken tenders and extremely greasy roasted potatoes. They wanted to charge me for the soda after she told me it was part of the meal.Bill was over $32.00 just for the 2 meals and no drink forTogo food SMH which I had to sit around in an empty restaurant for a good 25- 30 minutes.Just to get my food.
Chicken was bland potatoes were soaked in grease?I literally had to scrape them out of the section and put them in the other one. Hard PASS

Ordered 4 piece dinner but wanted to sub the wing for a thigh was told that I couldn’t do that , so the lady told me it would be $40,00 for the one dinner so I turned around and walked out and the lady yells at me sarcastically have a nice day totally disrespecting me and the sad part is I was wearing my Vietnam Veteran hat .I went across the street to KFC and ordered the exact same thing and they said no problem but their would be a $1.00 more charge which I was willing to pay. Great job guys you just lost a customer for good , that’s really a smart way to run a business for one lousy piece of chicken. I hope you go out of business with that attitude that your employees have.

I was so glad to stumble upon a Chicken Shack restaurant while on my recent trip to Metro Detroit. It was just as yummy as I remembered it to be. I love those broasted buttered potatoes. The chicken & ribs were very good too. It’s probably been 10+yrs since I’ve had Chicken Shack.

Something changed around covid and all chicken shacks have gone down hill. One example, their chicken bites taste like some frozen out of the bag garbage you can buy at the store.
Chicken shack is going the way of pizza hut, in the “was once good” bucket.
