The staff was very welcoming and answered any questions we had. We were offered samples of the available drinks which was a nice touch. They were all refreshing. The Butterfly Pea Flower lemonade was unique with its floral notes & real lemon – very tasty. The Watermelon Mint mojito was amazing – the fresh watermelon really made the drink special. Our favorite was the Thai tea. We’ve tried many Thai teas and this one exceeded expectations.
The diner-style, seat yourself vibe was comforting and inviting.
Our food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. Everything was cooked perfectly. Portion sizes were generous. The chicken had a flavorful, breaded crunch on the outside and was juicy on the inside. We had the Hot Chicken Sandwich – Cluckin hot (which is their level 3 heat – you can get up to 10! At 5 you get your photo on the wall) and the chicken tenders. The heat scale is awesome if you love spice. As we all know, it’s hard to find restaurants that give the heat you want in Minnesota. Best chicken sandwich I’ve had in a LONG time. We also tried the wings, Mac & Cheese, Spicy Fruit Salad, & Plantains. The Mac & Cheese was the least interesting of them all, but still good. The sauce on the wings was addicting. Best wings in the area hands down. I’ve never experienced anything like them. Like all the food here, the Southeast Asian & Peruvian spin is evident in the wings. The Spicy Fruit salad was perfect following the spicy chicken. It was light and refreshing. I’d pair these two again.
There’s also many vegetarian/vegan options on the menu I’m excited to try. I typically don’t eat meat but I had to try the chicken today. Many items (the fries, plantains, etc.) are cooked vegan friendly as well. It says a lot about a restaurant when dietary needs are considered so I really appreciated that aspect!!
Halfway through our meal, we were greeted by Isabel. One of the owners. She was incredibly kind and friendly. It’s clear she genuinely cares for her customers and the food she is putting out. There’s something special about eating a meal when you know the chef’s are excited to share it with you. STOP IN JUST TO MEET HER! She’s so sweet.
We finished our meal with the mango sticky rice which again, was delicious. I’ve tried many versions of mango rice, this one was a ten.
We were very impressed by our experience here! It’s exciting to see more international foods making their way to Brainerd. We have been NEEDING Chick N Rice for a long time!
Great service, great food, great prices. Easiest 5* review I’ve left. You have to try it! There’s plenty of options for kids too 🙂
I CAN NOT wait to try their new Thai restaurant, Drunken Noodle, coming in June!!! It will be in the same location. Im sure it won’t disappoint!
Brainerd, Minnesota’s downtown is a postcard come to life—clean streets lined with historic brick facades, a touch of the Northwoods in every detail, and that warm, small-town rhythm you can feel as soon as you step out of the car. Nestled in the middle of it all is a cozy spot offering the kind of diner seating that feels timeless—take your pick between the casual chatter of counter service or a street-view table, perfect for people-watching.
The cashier recommended The Ultimate Crunch and it did not disappoint! Think lettuce wraps with a twist: crispy chicken bits, nuts, avocado slices, and bold flavors in every bite.
Also took home the dumpling soup—pulled chicken, tender dumplings, and a few vegetables in a clear, rich broth. Comforting, flavorful, and worth every spoonful. Highly recommend if you’re in Brainerd and want fresh, flavorful food in a cozy setting.
Give Chicken N Rice a try…I think you’ll love it.
Bon appétit!
