we did not reserve but it would be encouraged as the place is rightfully popular. this place also has an award for best mayonnaise egg in Brittany!!! yum yum yumm
while we were there, a man came and had a wine tasting with the owner, let’s call him rené. it looks like they were having a great time. hopefully there will be good wine on the menu!
The menu is packed with classic French dishes, executed with care and confidence. The onion soup is hands down the best I’ve had in Paris so far: deeply flavorful, perfectly balanced, and topped with a beautifully gratinéed layer of cheese. The boeuf bourguignon was equally outstanding — tender beef, rich sauce, and classic accompaniments done exactly right.
Service is warm and efficient, and the overall experience feels genuine rather than touristy. If you’re looking for honest French cooking in a traditional setting, Chez René is an excellent choice and absolutely worth a visit.
I may have chosen poorly although the sauce was superb!
Highly recommended.
We got the escargot, pot-au-feu, and boeuf bourgninon. The two main dishes were specials off the menu and we knew they were known for them so we got them. Both came in very big portions which was nice.
The escargot were big and super flavorful with the green sauce. We got 6 of them but could’ve easily eaten more. Sauce was very addicting.
The boeuf bourgninon was very rich and savory. It really hit the spot and they serve it in a plate with the rest of it in a pot. The pot-au-feu was outstanding. A stewed beef soup that is definitely on the lighter side but the beef quality was very good and super tender. There were lots of different cuts of beef like tongue and marrow.
For dessert, we got the ‘floating island’ rich was pretty unique. It was like a meringue on top of a cream sauce with pomegranate candy and almonds. It was also huge and pretty tasty but wouldn’t say it was my favorite thing. Definitely worth trying though.
All in all a great classic Paris bistro experience.
Food was super good, beef bourgignon was fantastic, loved the chavignol cheese salad, and pretty much everything there ha. Great choice, super good
Booked for 10:00 PM through their website, seated at 10:10 PM. At 10:30 PM, while we were still eating, we were asked if we wanted dessert. At 10:40 PM, they asked whether we would like to finish the bottle of wine at home ( ). The way they spoke and asked was quite obvious—they wanted us to leave immediately. The shortest and most ridiculous dinner in Paris. The food might have been good, but I didn’t get the chance to truly enjoy it. I suggest adjusting the reservation times or not accepting bookings from guests if they’re not welcome.
