The story of The Cherokee is a story about a family business that started in the 1940s as Ruth’s Gift Shop. The owners were my grandparents, Ruth and James Wilson. They lived in an area of North Carolina that was known for hand-hooked rugs and chenille bedspreads. Ruth and James, along with several of Ruth’s 10 brothers and sisters, went up north and set up little road-side stands to sell their handcrafts in the summer. Out of necessity, my grandparents went west in search for yet another road-side rug stand. These locations were becoming harder and harder to find because of the nationwide interstate highway system being built. Their search ended at Chelsea, Oklahoma on old historic Route 66. I guess it was fate because that is …

You stopped there for dinner when Camping next with the KOA I had a buffalo burger with onion rings. It was unbelievable good hard to eat it. All my wife had a liver and onions with green beans and a baked potato and a salad bar. Our total bill was only $34 unbelievable prices. I don’t know how to do it. The food quality was excellent and the portions were so big. We could not even eat it all highly recommend this place. Awesome. Everybody was very friendly.

My hubby and I both got the southwest omelet and it was delicious. I got the coffee and let me tell you it was very good. I normally have to add sugar to coffee because a lot of restaurants coffee tastes burnt but I didn’t have to add anything to my coffee it was good just as it was. I will be back every time im in the area.

We had breakfast here today and the food was incredible. The chicken fry steak and eggs that we had for breakfast was great. Biscuits and gravy wonderful. The server we had was polite, friendly, and spent a lot of time smiling which is what you want to have when you go have a delicious meal. Definitely it’s a place to go and have a meal at.

We waited 30 minutes for drinks. Another 20 to get the menus, another 20 to get our order taken and then probably another 30 to receive our meal.
There was my husband and I and my 3 Grandkids. We had 2 specials.
And a swiss chicken burger with fries, which he got chips instead. Chicken strips and fries. And catfish baked potatoe green beans and 2 hushpuppies. The hush puppies were burnt. The specials had a sour taste. We sent one back cause my kid was starving. My husband didn’t want to go through the hassle. And ordered him a hamburger. The bun on top had something sticky on it. So that was another disappointment and only a 1/4 of it was eaten.. The fish was okay ( no tatorsause) and so was the Swiss burger. So at $100 dollars, and very bad service and the majority of the food not good. I doubt we will be back.

I love my wife dearly; however, she can make decisions based on billboards that are bad for both of us! I will grant you that out in the middle of Oklahoma on I 40 there aren’t a lot of places to eat. In this case we should’ve driven the 37 miles required to get to the subway that was a little further west,

I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. She had a chef salad. The grilled chicken sandwich was next to inedible the onion rings that came with it couldn’t have been in the fryer very long because the onions were still raw and the breading was barely brown. My wife’s salad was indescribable.

We looked at the reviews before we stopped so we were not prepared for what we found. The people who gave it five stars might, have had too many adult beverages. We chatted with a couple of people on the way out and their experiences were similar to ours. If you’re hungry, the food is edible and it does get a grudging three stars but that is in large part due to our server, she did try hard.
