First off, the food was delicious. I ordered the chicken wings with shrimp fried rice and shrimp egg roll, and. The chicken wings were cooked perfectly, even the fried rice was flavorful and not greasy at all. The service was fast and friendly. The staff greeted me with a smile and had my order ready in under 10 minutes. Everything was packed neatly and still hot when I got home.
Portions are generous for the price—definitely great value. I also appreciated how clean and organized the restaurant was, even during the lunch rush. If you’re looking for quick, tasty Chinese food that doesn’t taste like it came from a microwave, Chen’s Garden is a solid choice. I’ll definitely be back!

So I hadn’t had Chen’s since 2011 when I’d had it at work. I had a co-worker treat us to her Chinese place. I’d wanted to give it a go, 15 years later. It’s still there. They must be doing something right. They didn’t have coconut chicken. Not a lot of Chinese places have coconut chicken. I’d just gotten the sweet and sour chicken and some rangoons. The fried rice was a bit dark, but actually not bad tasting. The food was pretty decent.

If youre looking for a gel coated vegetable where the chicken is whiter than the white onions, and the fried chicken is darker than tea, this is your place! Im pretty sure the only seasoning used was a white pepper and a clear jello mix. Orange chicken taste like sweet and sour chicken, chicken lo mein with noodles was served with “fried” rice and jello mix, egg rolls taste like nothing but pepper and couldn’t even be salvaged with soy sauce. Crab rangoon was the ONLY thing that was good. $70 wasted to have nothing but the $7.55 rangoons be edible. Google isnt letting me upload a photo, but it looked like straight snot.

I love their Chow Mien so much. The flavor is there, and they add a good amount of beef and veggies.

Just ordered from there yesterday. I got beef egg foo young with fried rice and my bf got orange chicken with fried rice and chicken on the stick. The rice was fried hard and super greasy. My egg foo young didn’t taste right and the beef was super chewy and had not flavor. I thought it would be a good place to try since the reviews were great but I wouldn’t even feed this to my dog…respectfully.

I was disappointed with my last visit. I have almost known the chicken gizzards to be firm, fresh, and crisp. This time was different.

The texture was soggy and seemed undercooked. I could not even consume. I hurt my teeth trying to bite into it.
It was definitely less than the standard I was used to.

My meat and veggie dishes were not impressive. Undercooked meat it seems again.

I will definitely not be back.

For a reliable, no-fuss Chinese food fix, Chen’s Kitchen on Tidewater Drive is a true neighborhood gem. It has become our go-to spot for takeout, consistently delivering on flavor, speed, and friendly service. The folks running the kitchen clearly take pride in their work, and it shows in the quality of the food.
The menu is packed with all the familiar favorites you’d hope for. On our last order, the General Tso’s chicken was a standout—perfectly crispy even after the drive home, and coated in a sauce that had just the right balance of sweet and spicy. The fried rice is always fluffy and well-seasoned, and they don’t skimp on the fresh vegetables, which is a huge plus. Portions are generous for the price, making it a great value for a family dinner or for having leftovers the next day.
The only reason it’s not a perfect five stars is a minor inconsistency with some of the appetizers. While the main dishes are almost always on point, we’ve found that items like the crab rangoon can sometimes lack that fresh-made magic, tasting more like they came from a frozen box. It’s a small critique for an otherwise excellent kitchen.
Still, when you want dependable and delicious American-Chinese classics served up fast by a friendly crew, Chen’s Kitchen is one of the best choices in Norfolk. We’ll definitely be calling them for our next takeout night.

Update: second day in a row eating here. It’s still as good.
