So, I’ve been ordering from Chen’s Garden off and on for the last 11 years or so since moving to the area. In all my past instances, I’ve found their food to be over and beyond quality wise compared to other Chinese food restaurants in the area.
It’s been awhile since we’ve ordered from them as I wasn’t working nearby like I used to and I’d stop in to do takeout at least once a week and today, we found ourselves craving Chinese and happened to be nearby. Our order was simple, quart of wonton egg drop soup and two combination dinners, one being the boneless ribs and my wife ordered the orange chicken. This order was done at the counter, not called in so, hard to make an error when ordering face to face (so you’d hope).
While waiting, as usual, the lady and the man (owners I believe) were yelling at each other angrily (as usual lol). My wife was clear about what we wanted when she took our order.
After waiting 15 minutes or so, they bagged up the order and she paid. Upon checking the bag and order before leaving, it was found they made an error. An order of sesame chicken not orange chicken was made. My wife, very cheerfully brought this error to the lady’s attention and her response was, to say the least, nasty and hateful. She rolled her eyes and looked at my wife like she was a problem. She then, presumably in Chinese or mandarin, told her husband about the error. He too then gave my wife a nasty look and they began yelling at each other and the lady loudly told my wife and I to sit and wait it’ll be a few more minutes.
Now, besides the poor attitude on their part, which I could easily move on from, upon getting home and sitting down to eat, the food was nothing like I remembered it to be last time I ate there. The boneless ribs meat was fatty and chewy, the rice was dried out and the egg roll was disgustingly saturated with oil. My wife’s “chicken” was anything but chicken. It was literally fried breading and sauce. I saw nothing even remotely close to chicken in the pieces. The soup was not what I had remembered either as the wontons were “undercooked” and fell apart. They gave one bag of crunchy noodles, not two, as they had before, one for each meal also.
Sadly, we will not be frequenting their business from this point forward. The treatment my wife and I received was unacceptable and the quality of the food has declined greatly.
I always give honest reviews and this is another honest review.
I know many locals rave over Chen’s Garden…..and my review won’t be a popular one but….Chen’s, you need to do better.
Don’t think for one minute that because you’ve been a fixture in Morganton for these many years that your business is infallible. There are other Chinese restaurants in the area that I’m sure will be more than happy to see your doors close.

The food was lovely! I travel through Morganton every month and stopped here today for dinner. The staff was sweet and the restaurant had a homey feel. I will definitely be stopping here everytime I travel for the Hunan Beef. Big portions and good tasting ingredients.

Chen’s Garden takes care to make their steamed broccoli fresh and clean. That’s the only thing I’ve had from there, but it all smells good. Staff is friendly, service is timely, and their prices are very good. I appreciate having them in our community.

I must express my disappointment with the Chinese cuisine I recently experienced. The “chicken” in dishes such as the sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken appeared to consist primarily of breading and sauce, with a noticeable absence of actual chicken meat. The pricing seemed misaligned with the quality of the ingredients, as it felt as though we were primarily paying for breading rather than a substantial meal. This experience left us dissatisfied with the restaurant’s offerings.

I had a wonderful shrimp with cashew dish for lunch and still have half leftover for my supper. Very fresh and very crunchy veggies in it. Plenty of rice. The people at Chen’s were very friendly. I’m going back for shrimp and cashew next week.

A 93% sanitation rating is NOT ok and very disappointing, recently visited 9/7/2025. The food is just mediocre, at best, and most likely something that was pre-prepared that they just warmed up. You would be better off to buy some frozen meals at a grocery store. I will not be returning and I don’t think they look, or care, about their reviews.

Went to Chens Garden today. Female owner was extremely rude, rolling her eyes back, laying her head on the table and running her fingers thru her hair. Never been talked to like she did over me asking her a simple question. My family and I have given that restaurant a lot of business but will never be in there again. I’m telling everyone about my experience. She needs to get an attitude adjustment.

My favorite Chinese restaurant just closed,this was our 1st time ordering from here. Ordered 3 cheese wontons and a beef with broccoli combo meal. The wontons were so hard and chewy we couldn’t eat them, none of the 3 orders. They looked almost burnt and tasted awful. The beef with broccoli was good, egg roll okay, fried rice was not great but okay. Paid $26 and had to throw away all the wontons, didn’t eat rice, only ate beef with broccoli. Drove 35 mins just to get food here. Times like they are, I’m upset I wasted so much money on food we couldn’t eat. If not so far a drive I would had drove back, showed the wontons, and either requested a refund or fresh ones. I’ve only ever left 1 other neg review in my life, this will be my 2nd. I do not recommend.
