Well today, we wanted that exact dish, as thats what we order 100% of the time.
Knowing they are under new ownership, I noticed their menu has changed a tad, prices have gone up (usually what happens under new ownership).
But im sad to find that their General Tso recipe has changed. Its not that super saucy deep red sweet/tangy sauce anymore. It is a general orange-ish sauce. Still has a tangy/sweet. But completely different flavor profile, a lot of black pepper, not the red peppers youd find in the original al red sauce.
The portions seem to be a good size, and we also ordered chicken fried rice which seems to be about the same.
But im VERY sad their General Tso sauce has changed. I dont think we will be visiting as often. PLEASE BRING BACK THE RED SAUCE.
also, I understand they are undergoing some construction and updating the inside, which was needed in some ways, but now its losing that vintage Chinese atmosphere. Its starting to look a little stale as most updated establishments are moving too.
But doing loud construction during operating hours, and having guests in the dining hall is very loud, annoying and makes the visit not enjoyable. The workers had boxes laying on the floor in the walk way of the workers and they were going in and out around customers with flooring, and wall material… cant that stuff wait during closed hours or at night?
Needless to say, some things are changing for the good, and to keep up with economic times, but changing the recipe and turning the inside to a stale/bland establishment does not seem like the right move. Hong Kong House should keep its roots and show the culture. It makes it a unique experience.
I had two standbys I ordered most often, twice cooked Pork or Mongolia beef. The ladies working here are so nice and friendly. The old world style restaurant is just too quaint. It makes for the full experience in dining. Plenty of parking, and handicap can enter from north side entrance.
I know I needed it.
I want to try the Peking Duck.
I hear from other patrons it marvelous.
The staff was friendly and quick.
Highly recommend.
