So DISAPPOINTING! I never leave reviews but felt I had to. This was the worst chinese food I’ve ever had. I ordered pickup as I am traveling through and was staying in a nearby hotel. I ordered the General Tso chicken and Honey Chicken. The General Tso was basically sauced with sweet and sour sauce with a bunch of chopped up chili peppers added to it. We picked it up within 20 mins after placing the order and went back to the hotel up the road and the sauce was like a gel. Chicken wasn’t fresh but tasted old, reheated and dry. As for the Honey Chicken, it was breaded like the sweet and sour chicken, fried – very oily- with a huge tub of creamy HONEY MUSTARD sauce on the side! Definitely NOT like any honey chicken I’ve ever had. Both of these were priced at $17.95 each! NOT WORTH IT. I also ordered vegetable lo mein and that was just basic. I paid $60.00 for this food and didn’t hardly eat any of it because it was so terrible. I wish I would have went to the Panda Express up the road. I do not recommend this place at all. Save yourself an expensive DISAPPOINTMENT and order somewhere else. I gave 2 stars for the service as the lady at the counter was friendly.

Got a menu from next door Asian grocery store. Decided to order 4 items from the menu. Go inside and order from the lady up front, showed her exactly what we want on the menu. So I pay the almost $70 dollar bill. Seemed high to me, so I go out and show my wife the paid bill and we discover the total should be at least $10 less than what was paid. I go back and ask the lady if the price is right and she says oh yes and oh by the way this menu you ordered from is 10 years old. Ah ha now you tell me! Ok we let that go. Finally 20 minutes later she comes out with the food we ordered, and I left as we need to get home near Charlottesville. So on our way we begin to open our order and eat on the way. Never seen such a mess. The small roast pork buns (3) were probably bought next door from the grocery store, the the beef tendon w/chili sauce was way too sweet, the pig ear in chili sauce was SUBSTITUTED for wontons in chili oil, and the worst thing of all (pictured below) was the sautéed chitterlings w/ bell peppers and leek! Look at it carefully, this has no bell peppers and no leeks and yes those are FRENCH FRIES! Super extra spicy and all this for what was 10 years ago $18.95 and now a whopping 28.95! We had to throw most of this $70 order in the TRASH. Hey go if you dare, but I would NOT ADVISE IT!

My family is from Canton area. This place is very good and is chinese themed, meant to share the dishes with others. We got the scallion pancakes, mapo tofu, chongqing spicy chicken, spicy crispy tofu, and boiled fish with vegetables. Very good authentic Chinese food!

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Richmond. They have a wonderful selection on the menu. They also have many vegan and vegetarian options as well. The staff is great. It’s a great space for groups, couples, or an individual. Always recommend to my out of town friends when they visit.

This is a phenomenal gem of a restaurant located in Richmond, Virginia. From the moment you walk in and you’ll get greeted to the time you sit on the table, is a very pleasant experience. The hostess and the server were extremely polite well mannered. Now comes important part, the food! I’ve lived overseas in China and have been to China many times. Chengdu is one of my favorite places to visit. I was beyond impressed by the quality of the food and the taste of the food in this restaurant. The food was top-notch and was very reminiscent of the food that I had in the Sichuan province. I highly recommend this place and I’ll definitely be back to this restaurant again.

The food looked promising, but the flavors were disappointing. Noodles were soggy, broth lacked depth, and the skewers were overly oily and unevenly cooked. Overall, the meal felt rushed and did not meet expectations.

Diced beef with green peppercorn was incredible!! Some of the best food I’ve ever had. Loved the smacked cukes, dumplings and dry hotpot. Staff were incredibly kind.

The most authentic Chinese food you can get in Richmond for sure. The staff are very casual but attentive and food is very good and comes out very fast.

Definitely going to be a regular customer here! The serving portion are huge! It is a bit warm in there because there isn’t AC but it’s worth it for the delicious food.

I always love indulging in a succulent Chinese meal, and Cheng Du Restaurant in Richmond continues to be my absolute top choice for both classic favorites and more specialized, authentically prepared Sichuan dishes. It truly stands out as the best Chinese takeout in the city.

Their menu strikes a perfect balance: the familiar staples are consistently delicious, but it’s the Sichuan dishes that really set them apart. The depth of flavor, the proper use of Sichuan peppercorns, the bold heat, and the layered aromatics all speak to a kitchen that knows exactly what it’s doing. Whether it’s mapo tofu with that signature numbing spice, perfectly executed dry-fried green beans, or rich, fragrant braised dishes, everything tastes fresh, vibrant, and crafted with real skill.

Service is quick, portions are generous, and the food holds up beautifully for takeout, no small feat for a cuisine where texture and heat matter. Every order feels like a treat.

If you’re looking for Richmond’s best combination of comforting Chinese classics and truly authentic Sichuan cooking, Cheng Du Restaurant is fantastic. Highly recommend.

UPDTAED Feb 2026 –
Last year while in the area around lunchtime I stopped in here for lunch, but they weren’t open. So, recently while nearby around dinnertime I decided to give them another try. Walking in, it was completely empty, no customers. By the time I left, several tables were sat and they had a steady stream of carry-out/delivery pickups. The service was very spotty, as they only had two people working the dining room and so many people went without someone checking them in, I waited about 15 mins for my check and those delivery drivers formed a line waiting for their pickups.

I tried their spicy cucumber salad and their three pepper beef, but I sub’d out the beef for chicken instead. The cucumbers were decent, they had a nice spice to them and the vegetable itself was fresh. The three pepper chicken came out on a sizzling platter (a fajita platter with aluminum foil on it) and looked pretty good. My first few bites had the great flavor of wok hei, which I love! But I quickly noticed there was no other flavor other than some sort of pickled pepper flavor, which is very odd in Chinese food. The chicken texture was great, but the entire dish was swimming in vegetal oil, it wasn’t dry spiced and wok’d.

Overall, this visit was only slightly better than the first, only because they were open this time. But I most definitely wouldn’t return. I absolutely love and seek out authentic Chinese foods (Szechuan, Hunan, etc) when I travel and those this place offers many authentic style dishes, they seem a little too “Americanized.”

So disappointing! I love authentic Szechuan and seek it out. So, when I had plans to be in this area, I scoped out this spot and drove from Fredericksburg to come here. Getting there at 11:30 on a Wednesday, I was disappointed to find them closed. There was no sign in the window with hours or info. I looked up on the internet that they’re supposed to open at 11AM. I called and no one answered.

Such a pain!
