The first time (summer 2025) I dropped in I was actually waiting for food next door. Had a marg, chips/queso and got a quesabirria taco to try. It was good, flavorful. No complaints. The second time (Jan 2026) was very different. Food was subpar. It was either over salted or under. It left me begging for more flavor. I ate because I was hungry kind of meal. Not a lot of people inside both times I was there, however our waiters service was great and friendly.

Excellent spot for authentic Mexican food. The flavors truly taste like home, with fresh salsas and dishes full of real, traditional seasoning. The service is friendly and fast, and the pleasant atmosphere makes the experience even better. Perfect when you want to enjoy a true taste of Mexico in every bite.

This was my first visit to the Chela’s in Dexter, and it was not a great experience.

Service was fine, but the food was distinctly mediocre. The poblano & veggie tacos had ingredients that were poorly prepared and then drowned in an ocean of cheese. Even the obligatory chips & salsa tasted like store brand products off the shelf.

I love the tacos and chimichangas! probably the best in the area! Also love that they don’t charge extra for steak here!

The food is pretty basic. A lot of it tastes pre-packaged or pre-frozen, and I doubt much is made in-house. They have some interesting flavors and hot sauces, but there is definitely some Southwest US or other influence of some kind – we couldn’t really put a finger on it. Chips taste like Saltines. Guacamole was very bland, but the tamales were spicy. Only Mexican restaurant I have ever been to that has “ranch” anything on the menu. Overall just kind of odd but not terrible for a cheap meal. They were out of limes, so we couldn’t get margaritas, and we laughed in disbelief at that, wondering how that happens at a Mexican restaurant and why they wouldn’t just send someone to the store to pick some up. Honestly, I doubt we will be back unless it happens to be very convenient.

Not a bad spot but it seemed like a lot of the basics were awkward. Chips were probably Tostitos brand – thick, super salty, generic. The salsas tasted sour and vegetal like unripe fruit. Kids portions were smaller than expected but not necessarily off base.

Our order was ready quickly and the staff was friendly. Will try again some day.

Traditional Mexican at its best! I stopped in on a hungry whim while my son was at a birthday party. I ordered a short draft Pacifico cerveza and tacos- Carnitas, Campechana, and Al Pastor. All 3 were amazing in the meat quality and flavor, but I have to go with Al Pastor as my favorite. Their Verde salsa is fantastic with just chips but I absolutely put it on my tacos as well. Moses was my bartender and his service and knowledge of the food was excellent. He recommended the Tres Leches cake when I inquired about dessert, and it was beautiful in both taste and presentation! I was just too intrigued by the existence of a strawberry tamale to leave without trying one. Delicious, just like everything else! Overall a wonderful experience that I plan to share to with family and friends in the very near future! Definitely a new favorite restaurant that I cannot recommend enough!!

My husband and I visited Chela’s in Dexter last night. What a hidden gem. The food was amazing, service excellent. The burrito had a mixture of vegetables like carrots and green beans with the meat and it was incredible. So if you are looking for something different than the norm, I highly suggest checking it out.

A nice sweet tasting house margarita paired with their house made hot sauce make a wonderful combo. The tacos themselves were stuffed with toppings and filling. However, the meat itself was a little dry. Definitely try their Tilapia though!
