I do want to be clear: the service was exceptional. That is undeniable. But it was Tortilla Jack’s for years, and that smell is never going away. Neither is the raw sewage smell in the restrooms. The empty liquor bottles used as decor were an interesting touch.
We tried many different things. None were really enjoyable. I think the Cajun alfredo was the best, and even that was just homemade alfredo sprinkled with Cajun seasoning. Their homemade red sauce was decent too (by itself, without meat in it).
The French onion soup with a “sherry reduction” was not reduced–it just tasted like soup with straight alcohol. The chicken and gnocchi soup wasn’t your traditional thick, creamy soup and was pretty over-seasoned.
The meatballs were overcooked and overseasoned. Like they were either burnt, or had been sitting around for a bit. No amount of Alfredo sauce could neutralize that.
The calamari was fine. Kind of tough, but it’s calamari in Kansas so not gonna be mean about that.
The spinach dip–I cant really explain it. First bite tasted like the top had been torched with butane. The rest of it was just….not spinach dip. There really wasn’t a whole lot of spinach in there to warrant the name.
It was a pricey meal for the quality. I would probably spend the money elsewhere next time.
Service: SPECTACULAR! We were served with a smile, plenty of helpful information as first timers, and excellent easy conversation, that wasn’t awkward or overwhelming as can sometimes be the case.
Food: Oh. My. Goodness. I STILL have dreams that leave me waking up in drool over the food we ate! We ordered the Bruschetta to start, and my god it brought literal tears to my eyes! I hadn’t tasted one as fantastic since my Grandfather had passed back in 2020. Meals, my husband ordered a unique twist on a grilled cheese that I have yet to see offered anywhere else, and I a bread bowl with some of the most delicious vodka sauce covered pasta I could’ve ever hoped for. Oh and Dessert, that chocolate lasagna was so good I considered trying to buy a whole pan of it!
The atmosphere was so cozy and comfortable. My husband and I enjoyed looking at the mix of old photos with new “old time” style photo shoots of the team there at Chef’s Kiss.
This restaurant was an instant classic, and immediately one I put at the top of my favorites list! I will be returning. And I can’t wait to try the whole menu, because I’m wholly convinced there isn’t an item on it I won’t enjoy.
Thank you guys for helping my husband and I have a fantastic impromptu date, and for serving up not only amazing food, but fantastic memories as well!
The menu wasn’t long, but had a lot of depth.
We were given some of the nicest breadsticks to start with olive oil and vinegar, they were buttery and warm, not just room temp. For an additional appetizer I ordered the spinach dip which was very well seasoned and very creamy, but not overwhelming, definitely left me hungry for the mains.
Per our server’s suggestion, I ordered the fettuccine with vodka cream sauce and homemade meatballs, the fettuccine was cooked just a bit beyond al dente but wasn’t overcooked, soft but not mushy. The meatballs were very well seasoned with a lot of herbs, and were the size of a child’s fists.
Also with my pasta I had the option of french onion or Italian wedding soup. I chose the latter and did not regret it. It was very hearty with a healthy amount of vegetables and decently sized meatballs; but the selling point was the broth, probably the best Italian wedding soup I’ve had at a restaurant in the area.
Speaking of servers, Stephanie was great! Really added to the atmosphere and made sure my group was well taken care of. Definitely ask for her around dinner!
My wife made her own pasta dish (Vodka Cream sauce, with shrimp and linguine) and the house salad which she thoroughly enjoyed. I ordered the Tuscan Ribeye, with French onion soup and parmessan encrusted fries. (The soup is AMAZING – highly recommend trying it!).
We shared the chocolate lasagne for desert and both enjoyed it.
The ambience is very intimate, the portion sizes were perfect, the service was quick, and the staff were friendly and attentive.
Thank you for a wonderful experience!
