One of the best restaurants in Amherst! My partner and I order from here once or twice a week; the food is consistently fresh, hot, and delicious. Everything is seasoned perfectly. The all-day combo is so affordable, with a lot of options. We like the General Tso’s Chicken, Mapo Tofu, Beef Teriyaki Skewers, Poached Chicken over Rice, and Crab Rangoons, but you can’t miss with anything here. The service is also so sweet and lovely, definitely the highlight of Chef Lau’s. Thank you!!

We had an excellent experience at this hole in the wall Chinese Take-out/Dine-in establishment after a long business workday. The owner was super friendly and helpful, and he made several recommendations of authentic Cantonese dishes. Everyone enjoyed the food very much. BYOB was okay as well.

We love The food at this family run restaurant. The prices are most reasonable! The quality and taste is superb located in Amherst Massachusetts. Please support these hardworking, Delightful people! I heard that their business is struggling due to the decline in foreign students at UMass. Please try them and order some great Chinese food!!

Drove 2 hours to vsit Chef Lau from Boston for 2 times, tried different dishes, all came out with excellent taste and quality. The most authentic Hongkong food we have ever eaten in the New England area.

Chef Lau provides wonderful food, is extremely friendly and well priced. Best and most consistently well prepared Hong Kong food in the greater area. Please patronize them. You will love the food.

The poached chicken is what chinese food should be, real food cooked without needing to be submerged in a puddle of sugary, salty ooze to taste good. It comes with ginger sauce, which was fresh and full of flavor. The roast pork is even better, sweet and tender like boneless ribs minus the excess oils and additives. I’m also a fan of their pork fried rice, which is the tastiest in the region.

1 Star — The Worst Chinese Food in Amherst (and That’s Saying Something!)
I ordered the “All Day Combo” General Tso’s Chicken with Vegetable Fried Rice* for lunch — and wow, I wish I hadn’t.
The portion was pathetic: maybe five tablespoons of pre-cooked fried rice and five tiny, shriveled pieces of chicken (smaller than nuggets!) that were clearly reheated leftovers. The chicken was tough, dry, and chewy — like biting into old rubber.
And the price? $12.70 for what? A sad excuse for a meal. Absolutely no value, no freshness, and no effort whatsoever.
This was hands-down the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had in Amherst — and possibly anywhere. Located on College Street, this place needs to do some serious soul-searching about what they’re serving people.
If you value your money (and your taste buds), stay far, far away.
This wasn’t lunch — it was a culinary insult in a takeout box.
Save yourself the disappointment. Just don’t.

Food is always fresh, beautiful, and delicious. Feels like it’s made with love. Atmosphere is small but with great service. Worth going to!

I really enjoy eating the food at Chef Lau’s. I usually order the salt and pepper squid, but I wanted to shake things up today so I elected to order the chicken and broccoli combination! What a surprise, the chicken was well seasoned, the broccoli was fresh, crunchy but not raw, and the fried rice tasted so real, not the usual stuff you get from a Chinese restaurant, but a lightly seasoned, not too salty, very deliciously prepared fried rice with carrots, peas and eggs. Everything was freshly stir fried and you can taste the difference and the light flame touched flavor. I will definitely be back!
