We ordered our drinks and decided to order quite a few appetizers just so we could try quite a few things at once to see what we liked. We ordered the Never have I ever tried which was rabbit egg rolls, crispy provolone cheese wedges, alligator fritters and the swamp fire frog legs. The waitress told us that since they were busy it would probably be a little wait for our food and we said that was okay. The cheese, egg rolls and frog legs were good but the fritters didn’t even look like fritters. It had barely anything in it and was more like dry bread which we didn’t finish. We were talking about coming back again to try other things we had seen on the menu.
Our entrees that we ordered included the wild boar osso bucco, trio of wild game sausages, slow roasted bison ribs, pulled wild boar sliders and our toddler ordered boneless chicken wings with garlic butter. Four of our meals were also to include a side salad. I’d like to mention that we aren’t new to having game meat and we were comfortable ordering it.
While we were eating our appetizers the family beside us had left and the waitress came to clear the table. Instead of removing the tablecloth like the other waitresses had done when someone was finished she decided to “shake it off” instead and put it back on. I’m not sure why you would do that in the first place but to also do it beside people that are eating is insane. (This wasn’t our waitress and thankfully no one was seated there after but it should’ve been changed.)
After 1.5 hours of waiting for our food it came out and we were immediately hesitant to even try it based off of appearance alone. The wild boar meat on the sliders and the osso bucco was grey and appeared boiled. The ribs were very dry looking but the sausage trio did look good. The person that ate the sausages said they tasted just okay but that the food seemed bland. Our toddler said she liked the boneless chicken wings. The ribs were indeed dry and bland. The person that ate the sliders said the meat tasted bad and wasn’t comfortable trying to eat any more of it. I tried the osso bucco and had to spit it into a napkin. We waited awhile for the waitress to come back and had told her the food hadn’t been good and that the boar tasted like it was bad and that we had never received our salads. She offered to remove the osso bucco from our bill. Our bill came to $157 and we had to take our children to get something to eat after we left. It’s been a few hours and I am unfortunately sick now. I don’t see a repeat visit in our future.
Also, please remove the dying plant from the dining room.
Highly disappointed
My wife and I visited for lunch and each got a handmade cocktail–a Negroni and Manhattan–perfectly crafted by Kara herself. We ordered the Giant Bavarian Pretzel with bier cheese as an appetizer, which was, in fact, absolutely enormous (the size of my adult head!), hot and flaky, and the hot cheese dip was *chef’s kiss*.
We were both feeling a sandwich, so after some help from our amazing server Paige (ask for Paige as your server!), I selected Chef Dato’s Famous Giant Fish Sandwich and my wife picked the Roasted Turkey on (house made) Stuffing Bread (basically a Thanksgiving meal in sandwich form with gravy and cranberry jelly–the stuffing IS THE BREAD!). Did I mention the portions are enormous here? Come hungry!
Our sandwiches were perfect and the fries hot and crispy. We had zero room to try dessert this time around but I cannot wait to return to try their dinner entrees or one of their famous Wild Game nights.
Latrobe is incredibly lucky to have Chef Dato’s. Swing by when you’re in the area!
