It was a rather blustery day in the Helena area as Otto and I drove into town for our latest ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure. We were dodging the tumbling tumbleweeds, fallen trees, and collapsed street lights as we headed for our target, Cheddars Gourmet Grilled Cheese.
This restaurant began years ago as a very popular food truck. About four years ago they moved into their current building near downtown Helena. They still run their food truck during the warmer seasons, but we prefer a sit down location, so this was perfect for us. The dining area consisted of eight shiny wooden tables ranging from 2 to 4 chairs. On the silent TV we were able to watch the Microsoft Excel World Championships, followed by Speed Chess Championship. (I wasn’t even aware that there was a Microsoft Excel World Championship, or even what channel would carry it.)
Immediately upon entering we noticed the very bright, happy interior. Cheese-colored walls provide a warm ambiance. The background music could best be described as “modern folksy.” We were cheerfully greeted by the very friendly guy behind the counter. He assured us that he’d be happy to help us make our menu decision. Otto asked him, “What’s your meatiest sandwich?” He replied, “That would be our Downtown Sandwich, which has ham, turkey, bacon, cheddar, provolone, and a special ranch sauce.” It didn’t take much convincing for Otto to select that one, plus a cup of coffee.
I opted for the Reuben, (because I’m a real sucker for a good Reuben.) The Reuben is comprised of pastrami, Swiss cheese, thousand island dressing and sauerkraut. I also ordered a cup of coffee. The coffees were given to us in paper take-out cups with lids while we were still at the counter.
Both sandwiches were perfectly toasted, while the cheese was nice and melty. The flavors were fresh and on point. The plate included a cup of dipping sauce that very much resembled a gourmet tomato soup.
I asked Otto how he felt about his meal, and he glanced at his plate as he answered, “I can’t find anything here to criticize. This is a niche restaurant with really good food and there’s nothing else like it in town.” He also stated that if he’s ever in town and feeling a little hungry he wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
Cheddars really knows how to grill a sandwich and I’m excited to go back and explore some of their other menu options.
