We had 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 rice and 1 naan and left very satisfied and full. All was cooked very well and the flavours were delicious.
Update 2024:
Chaula’s is incredible.
Staff very knowledgeable and friendly on what is vegan and what isn’t. All the food is cooked in sunflower oil, not ghee so the choice is very good. Completely separate vegetarian sections on the menu, and not just the usual 5-8 curries you get, some very interesting options.
The curries all tasted fresh and left us full but not over-full. The roti and paratha were also excellent.
Overall, this is probably the best Indian I’ve visited in years.
There was a great selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, all labelled on the menu, and the staff were very helpful with any questions we had about the cooking of the dishes. Couldn’t recommend more for a lovely meal!
Please don’t scam customers by using the name of Indian cuisine while serving food that doesn’t even meet basic quality standards. I felt completely disappointed and cheated. I’m leaving this review as a warning to other customers: save your money and go somewhere that actually respects the food they’re serving.
By 9 pm, everyone else in the restaurant had eaten and left, and when a server came over to ask if we were “ready for our mains,” it honestly felt insulting. We’d been sitting there hungry for an hour and a half. It seemed as though they were trying to stall us with drinks and poppadoms, hoping we wouldn’t notice the delay.
The popadoms were soggy rather than crisp, and the pots of sauces that came with them were thimble sized. When the mains finally arrived, we had to order more dishes as the portions were small.
I quietly addressed the wait when we paid the (very overpriced) bill as I didn’t want to make a scene and I was surprised to not receive an apology only excuses! Instead of taking accountability she told me they make all the curry sauces individually unlike other curry houses and there was a large table upstairs. It seems like I’m not the only person to experience this lack of accountability – I see the restaurant replied to another negative review saying the customer had lied!
I paid a £10 per person deposit when I booked the table. When I asked for my deposit back the card machine declined the refund and the manager took it off the bill instead. This was fine but she told my father who paid to get my bank details and transfer me the money, which seemed unprofessional.
As it was the night before my wedding I didn’t make a fuss or even have the service charge removed (the bill was £350). However I will not be returning to Chaula’s and can’t recommend it. Zero stars.
Joan has had some great birthdays and family celebrations here .
Lovely food particularly the veg makhani , I’m inspired to make at home .
Thankyou to the polite staff as always
What a lousy manager – He agreed that the quality was poor and didn’t bother offering a reduced price or any form of apology! £37 🙁 i fought for a reduction and in fact he just brought the beer price down to the advertised price
There were almost no lentils in the dhansak and it was over salted. Weirdly the kitchen staff used the guest toilet!
They also had a great selection of drinks to complement the meal, including both classic Indian beverages and modern options.
What really set this place apart was the stunning original architecture and the deep sense of history throughout the space. You can feel the culture and heritage in every corner — it’s not just a meal, it’s an experience.
On top of all that, the restaurant is thoughtfully designed to be disability-friendly, making it welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy an unforgettable dining experience rooted in tradition and hospitality!
