After a week of amazing Mexican food in SJdC, we had the urge for…a hamburger. We saw a few reviews that said Chato’s had good ones…but they were wrong, Chato’s has great ones! Dennis welcomed us at the door, and since he grew up in L.A. there was no language barrier. Be ready for his Canadian quiz, “who was the greatest Canadian?”. Three of our party each went for the Hawaiian, BBQ, & Chato Special burgers, each one was excellent, great flavours. The last of our group went for ceviche, which came in a large portion and was equally excellent. Margarita’s were also very good and made with fresh fruit. Celia assisted Dennis with food/drinks, and she is simply adorable! We are definitely going back for the Mexican fare, or maybe even breakfast?…

What a delight evening with Dennis and his team.

I had the lobster taco special, she had the sea bass. Both dishes with shareable, and very enjoyable.

We started with guacamole. The Chato’s guacamole and salsas were worthwhile and added to our entrées.

This is a spot to stop for fish, tacos and a wonderful meal!

Dennis and I talked Seattle Mariners, the sports app Sports On What, and things to do locally.

We will be back!

Unfortunately, this was a major disappointment. I ordered the oyster Rockefeller, and it was nothing like how it’s traditionally prepared in the United States truly god-awful and nasty. The red fish was bland and poorly seasoned. If you’re accustomed to bold, well-seasoned seafood like what you find in the Caribbean or in places like Jamaica, Brazil, or Colombia, you’ll likely be very unhappy here.

The fish tacos were fine, and the margarita was mid at best. Service was good, but the ceviche came out extremely late, and it seemed like they forgot we even ordered it. I didn’t try it and sent it back.

Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant.

Ordered grilled whole red snapper, seafood soup, and oyster on the shell.

Oysters: 5
Oysters are farm raised, decent size, good flavor without adding any sauce. Price (40 pesos for one) is comparable to US.

Grilled snapper. 4
We ordered garlic and butter. It was grilled well, and the fish is fresh. However, it tastes a bit plain (lacks of garlic/butter flavors).

Seafood soup. 1
A poorly prepared soup. Watery tomato based. Lack of seafood flavors. Fish was not fresh and tasted funny. We have had it in many restaurants in St Lucas and San José. It is the worst.

Service. 3
Tortillas were supposed offered, but they were never delivered. Given the soup is so bad, we did not bother to ask for.

Atmosphere. 2
Located at the busy traffic intersection. Rather dusty!!The store charged additional 4% for using a credit card without telling patrons in advance. It is the only restaurant we dined charging credit card use.

Awesome food in a touristy location. Plenty of outdoor seating. Staff was courteous and responded quickly. Ordered the seafood molcajete and was very pleased. Came with home made flour tortillas with cheese and beans. The octopus was a little chewy but had great flavor. The shrimp were all sliced and full of flavor. Would recommend.

The customer service was as good as the food! We went back twice before we left for home! Julio, the guy that worked at the resort we stayed at, recommended this place and Chatos did not disappoint!! We had such a good time with everyone, we were treated like family both times we went!! The first was afternoon, the next was night. I highly recommend this family owned restaurant if you’re on the area!!
Wish I had more pictures, but I took videos instead

A great find that’s very affordable. The fish was very fresh. The red snapper fell off the bone. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, and they were very helpful in helping me pick a sauce for my fish and side dishes that I was interested in. The service was friendly without being overbearing, and we will definitely go back!
