Charcoal Venice is an inviting neighborhood restaurant from Michelin-starred Chef and Owner Josiah Citrin that was inspired by the backyard barbecues he hosts on weekends for his friends and family. As the name suggests, everything is cooked indoors over live fire – whether over charcoal or in the coals. Citrin and Chef de Cuisine Dani McNish prepare a seasonal menu of craveable comfort foods featuring locally-sourced proteins and vegetables ideal for sharing family-style. Whether diving into a platter of smoky grilled chicken wings with a beer or classic cocktail at the bar, or splitting a 48 oz. dry-aged Porterhouse and a bottle of Bandol with friends, Charcoal Venice is an everyday dining spot.
Casual grill house for wood-fired meats, seafood & vegetables in a contemporary space with booths.

Seating outside was in an ‘Yard’ out the back of the Restaurant, they had tried to decorated it and it was pleasant, but ot could’ve been better.
The Service was both good and average…The Waitress was great, the other Waiting staff were a bit slapdash, ‘throwing’ plates onto the table, spilling Wine when topping Glasses up, just ‘lazy’ attitude…
The food was also a bit ‘hit-n-miss’. The Shishito Peppers Starters were nice (although there wasn’t many Peppers, but lots of Snap Peas ), the Cabbage baked in Embers was good
The 8oz Fillet Main Course was excellent , the American Wagyu Sirloin was poor (very chewy ), Fries were great , Roasted Wild Mushrooms Side not so good .
Overall, it was an average meal given the price, not sure I’d rush back there
I’d like to point out how delicious their house vinegar is that sits on the table. It’s inside the Maker’s Mark bottle and they use many different spices to create their own vinegar. It honestly goes great with the meat and veggies. We started off with the Beef Tartare and really loved it. It was well balanced and had a bit of spice to it and overall it was a real hit at the table. We also ordered a seasonal salad, which was the Heirloom Tomato Salad, and thought it was absolutely fantastic. The heirloom tomatoes were fresh, and it came with a lot of onions soaked in vinaigrette, which is an amazing combo for me. For our entrées, we chose the 10 ounce Prime Skirt Steak based on our waiter’s recommendation and the seasonal Tagliatelle. The steak was cooked perfectly and was juicy for every single bite. It was also a good size portion with no fat on it, which means the meat is high quality. The pasta was pretty large in size and great in flavor. It was really well balanced with the ingredients and it made some great leftovers. We wanted to try a dessert but after our meal, we were pretty full, but I plan to be back again in the near future to try more items. I would highly recommend to anyone searching for a great steakhouse or for a great Venice dinner.
But it’s not just the meat that is well prepared. We started off with some amazing sourdough and butter, followed by the charred cabbage. Man was that an amazing dish, I was bummed that I had to share it with the table. Solid old fashioned which always goes well with smoked and charred foods.
The main show: gigantic piece of meat that we shared amongst 4 of us with all the sides. The steak itself was perfectly cooked and had the right marbling and char to make it amazing. The sides were all great, I loved the broccolini and the mushrooms, and the carrots were glazed and caramelised and so so tasty.
A great vibe in the restaurant, and wonderful service, who could ask for anything more! Run, don’t walk to Charcoal!
We went for DineLA so we got to try a lot of different things on the menu.
The starters included hamachi, chicken wings and cabbage. Of the three, the chicken wings were by far the best. They had an amazing smoked flavor. I really wasn’t that into the cabbage, but it came with a delicious dipping sauce.
Next up were the salads. I went for the strawberry salad and it was OK, but kind of standard.
I was really excited about trying the steak as the entrée, but it was pretty chewy. I did enjoy the dipping sauces that it was served with, though. We had carrots and summer squash as the vegetable sides, and both of them were quite bland.
We randomly ordered the fries after seeing them go to another table and that was maybe my favorite thing we tried, especially dipped in the fantastic house-made vinegar
And finally, dessert. The dessert was a peach and blueberry cobbler, not what was advertised on the DineLA website, and I wasn’t into it. The top was dry and almost too crumbly, like there wasn’t enough butter to hold it together.
