My husband and I made a reservation here for Valentine’s Day and unfortunately, it was completely not worth it.
I do want to say that our waiter, Ethan, was phenomenal. He was very informative, attentive, and truly provided excellent service throughout the evening. He was the highlight of our experience.
However, the food was extremely disappointing. For the amount of money we paid — over $400, almost $500 including tip — we expected something exceptional. Instead, the meal felt overpriced, underwhelming, and honestly overrated. The quality did not match the price point at all. It felt more like we were paying for the hype rather than the food itself.
Valentine’s Day is supposed to feel special, and sadly the food did not live up to that expectation. We left feeling disappointed and like it simply wasn’t worth what we spent.
Exceptional Service from Collin at Char
Our dining experience at Char was truly elevated by the impeccable service from Collin. From the moment we were seated, he made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for. Collin went above and beyond—not only recommending outstanding dishes, but first taking the time to ask about our preferences and tastes before offering thoughtful, personalized suggestions. Every recommendation was perfectly suited to our palate and complemented the flow of the meal beautifully.
Throughout the evening, Collin balanced attentiveness and discretion with ease. Our glasses were never empty, plates were timed perfectly between courses, and he seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even had to ask. His professionalism, knowledge of the menu, and warm, confident demeanor set the tone for an exceptional fine-dining experience.
It’s rare to encounter service that feels both polished and genuinely personal, but Collin delivered exactly that. He is a true credit to Char, and we’ll absolutely be requesting him for every visit!
The menu was a bit overwhelming for our taste, but our server, Michael, was great. He could tell we were new and kindly walked us through everything. I skipped wine and ordered the Flirtini, which was strong but tasty. We both ordered filets, an 8oz medium for me and a 14oz bone-in medium for my husband.
While waiting, we were served a bread basket which unfortunately was soggy in the middle and seemed underdone. Our entrees came out quickly, but maybe too quickly, since my husband’s steak was nearly rare in the middle. The staff was very apologetic and took it back, but by the time it returned (perfectly cooked the second time), I was nearly finished with my meal. The chef personally brought it out with a fresh side, again very apologetic, though his comment about “those being so thick they take forever to cook” wasn’t exactly what we wanted to hear.
Overall, the food was good, but not quite as impressive as we expected for the price point. They did comp our dessert, which was delicious and much appreciated. It was a nice evening, but probably not one we’d rush to repeat. My husband jokes that he still prefers Colton’s.
First of all, the restaurant is stunning. We’ve dined at many fine dining establishments and this one hits the mark – contemporary elegance at its best.
Hadley, our server, was outstanding. She was professional, but also friendly and conversational. She is an asset to your team!
The food was exactly what you would expect at a five-star restaurant. Dishes were timed perfectly and everything our party of 4 ordered was wonderful. The steaks are the star of the show here and each was perfectly cooked to order and exceptionally flavorful, especially the A5 wagyu. You don’t want to miss the lobster risotto or the lyonnaise potatoes! The cocktails and wine offerings were stellar and, while we claimed to be “too full”, the dessert was divine.
Char is on par with exclusive restaurants in much bigger cities, and we look forward to a return visit next time we are in Springfield.
