Ann Arbor has an authentic Mexican restaurant downtown. We visited Chalapa for the first time and enjoyed everything we orderd. The food has just the right (authentic) spice and Latin flavor that brings you closer to the true Latin heritage. If you’re ever downtown Ann Arbor and want to get away to Mexico, just travel down Main St and you have arrived (without a passport and a long flight)!

Very decorative & cute restaurant, usually busy, & reservations are recommended. Fyi: They can accommodate large groups for sitting (we saw a group of 16 – they pulled tables to accommodate seating). Delicious tortilla chips & salsa – and they bring more if you ask without charge (a bonus!). The refried beans are delicious, and their sauces are full of flavor and always come in ample portions. My favorite dish was the chicken Enchilada. My group enjoyed the birria with comsemme, the shrimp tacos, & the shredded beef burrito. All dishes were served in good portions, with fresh ingredients, fresh vegetables and arrived to the table fresh & hot. This place is a definite must try for mexican cuisine! I highly recommend it.

We went in for dinner on a weeknight and it turned out to be a pretty decent experience. The place wasn’t overly busy and we were seated quickly. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans, and the portion was fair for the price. The sauce had a nice flavor, not too spicy but still had some kick. My friend got tacos and said they were good, though the tortilla could have been a bit warmer. Service was polite and the food came out in a reasonable time. The restaurant felt relaxed and casual, which made it easy to enjoy the meal. I’d likely come back again when I’m in the area.

No wait at 5pm on a Friday. Decent vegetarian selection. Chips and salsa were great to start the meal! Good portion size for the price. I wasn’t blown away by the food. Very standard American Mexican food. Margs are good n large.

I recently visited Chapala Mexican Restaurant on Main Street in Ann Arbor, and there’s no denying the fun and festive atmosphere inside. The space is bright, colorful, and full of personality—they even have swinging benches at the bar, which adds a playful touch that sets the place apart.

The service was friendly, and we appreciated the complimentary chips and salsa to start. The chips were thick and hearty, though they tasted a bit stale, but still worked well as a vehicle for the salsa.

I was a little surprised by the higher menu prices, but that might be expected given the location in downtown Ann Arbor. I ordered the Chile Rellenos, which are cheese-stuffed peppers that are fried. While the peppers and cheese were good, the fried coating was heavy and left me feeling a bit unwell afterward. I’m not sure if it was due to old oil or improper frying temperature, but it’s not a dish I’d order again. On the other hand, the rice and beans on the side were solid and classic—no complaints there.

They do offer happy hour specials starting at 3:00 PM, including discounted margaritas, though I didn’t see any signage about it during my visit. They also have Taco Tuesday deals, which might be worth checking out on a return visit.

Someone by the name of ‘Irelie’ messed up my order completely. She promised for 6 tacos I can get 4 taco salsas and that she would personally check. Well guess what? She didnt and I only got two salsas for 6 freaking tacos. Dry as hell. Dishonest and disgustingly dry, check the pics

Chapala is always a great place to spend time with friends, eat some hearty Mexican food, and get a delicious margarita. I will say the music is very, very loud, so that can be bothersome, especially if you’re trying to have a conversation. I would say come here for a fun pre-game or something, and to have a fun celebration!

I’ve been a couple of times and at this point, I’d say it’s an average place for Mexican food in Ann Arbor. Food is never amazing but can be good. It’s just never consistent. Sometimes chips are stale and sometimes they’re hot and fresh! When I had the Gordita’s, the shredded beef and masa was dry. But friends would say theirs was good other times. Sometimes staff is great and sometimes they’re okay. So I just think it’s a place that needs a refresh of ideas and optimism.

Here are my tips:
1. Keep it consistent. I want to come in and try new things. Not just hope what I’m ordering will be good and then it’s just okay.
2. Get new chips or store them differently.
3. Please change the cleaner you’re using. Its smells WAY to strong. The place should smell like the food you’re cooking.
4. Keep the music low.
5. Paint and decor needs touching up. It’s starting to feel dingy in there.
6. Hostess station is not welcoming at all. It’s small, close to the entrance and overwhelmed with take-out orders and such.
7. Staff needs to put a smile on even when they’re having a bad day. It’s about community and creating a welcoming place for people to hang out. This is also inconsistent and why reviews are all over the place.

This might read as harsh but it’s all coming from a warm heart that likes to see local businesses succeed. I hope the best for this place. 🙂 I love the happy hours! Beans and rice are good too!

We love the atmosphere at Chapala!
My kids always ask for their enchiladas and they eat it all…
This time we got the Monster Burrito, mine had all the toppings, they accommodated to my husband so it was dairy free and the red sauce was on the side.
But oh so delicious either way! It was plenty for us to bring food home for a second meal
Thursday night was busy with a lot of college kids, but we were still seated fast and food came out in a reasonable time.
We always come here!
