CONTEXT
I stopped in for dinner with a friend since I enjoy trying new places. Paid $25, excluding tax for a $9 bahn mi, $8 ragoon and a $6 bubble tea…
LET’S TALK ABOUT FOOD
MILK TEA bubble tea they served me was a CRIME. Absolutely terrible. You could tell that they made it using the powder stuff, but it also lacked flavor. The worst part about it all was that the boba in it was not cooked right so it was a little hard in the center. Please just take it off the menu if you can’t deliver. I cannot believe I paid $6 for this…
BAHN MI – I ordered the Chao’s Special Banh Mi. Tasted fine. I have had better. The sparse, thin amount of meat though was Dickensian. Did I even eat?
Bacon & Jalapeno Ragoon. You get three whole rangoons for $8. Tasted fine.
My friend ordered the Chao Fries and enjoyed them, but they also mostly choose American burger joints for food… Fair enough ♀️
ALTERNATIVES: There are so many other Vietnamese places you can eat at in Indy, if you are willing to drive a little for good food. If you want a good Pho then I’m reccomending Pho Tasty in Castleton, really amazing. Or Pho Lai on the south side. If you want a great bahn mi, then Hanna’s Banh Mi Bakery and Cafe in Castleton. Sometimes you need to drive for good food. I live on the south side of Indy and ended up eating here.
Even after 10 years, the chef keeps things fresh with new ideas! Loved the homemade sauces and the Vietnamese coffee-flavor ice cream on the waffle. Definitely coming back!
The cucumber and pork salad was another highlight—refreshing, crunchy, and vibrant with a hint of sweetness and heat. It paired especially well with the house-made sriracha-style sauce (a must-try if you like a little kick!).
What really elevated the experience was the service. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and made great recommendations without being overbearing. From start to finish, it felt like they genuinely cared about ensuring a great dining experience.
It’s definitely a spot worth returning to—great food, a relaxed vibe, and top-notch hospitality.
So I posted order at 7 pm for pick up ( because we were staying at the Sparks hotel very close to the restaurant) but we didn’t account for traffic on the roads and arrived in front of restaurant 10 minutes after they closed. I called since I did see people still inside with their lights off. And explained that we r here 10 minutes later but after I have my name for the order nobady seamed to be able to locate my order?!?
Finally I think owner got on the phone and was very honest and said how sorry he was but it seems that food delivery drivers took my order by mistake and because it’s now almost 30 minutes after they closed kitchen they are not able to remake my dinner…. Obviously I was very disappointed and hungry …
Owner did apologize profusely and refunded my $$$ and on top of it gave me a food gift card in the same amount of my order. ♀️
That kinda fixed my mood a bit …
Tomorrow we were checking out of our hotel and decided to use our food gift card and order some Ban mihs and some Pho broth but poor teenager who was packing food in the plastic bag forgot to double bag broth and he put everything together in the same plastic bag and of course plastic lid popped open and soup spilled all over the sandwiches ♀️
At this point, my husband was laughing because it felt as we were not meant to eat here at all
But owner came back immediately and realized what happened and decided to quickly remake our sandwiches…
I gotta say something. Mistakes happen in life. And last night was probably the worst night for me to miss my highly anticipated Vietnamese dinner but when I took a first bite of that crispy baguette and got a taste of perfectly charred grilled pork, with freshness of cilantro, crispy pickled carrots and daikon and cucumbers with pate and mayonnaise…. All my disappointment disappeared !!!!!
It’s been a while since I had perfect Banh mi !!!! Thank you to owner ( who I don’t know the name ) but you did EVERYTHING to fix horrible circumstances… and yes we will be back to try the entire menu!!!!
Thank you front of house for your understanding and checking in on us throughout! Food is worth the drive. Taylor, I believe is her name, enhanced our experience from Good to Great.
The food is absolutely great. It’s not just good—it truly tastes authentic. Every dish we tried felt carefully prepared and packed with genuine flavors that transported us. If you’re looking for a meal that is both delicious and true to its culinary roots, look no further.
Equally impressive was the crew. The staff was friendly, attentive, and clearly professional. They handled everything seamlessly, which made our dining experience incredibly relaxed and enjoyable.
This restaurant is a fantastic find, blending incredible, authentic food with outstanding service. We’ll definitely be back!
