I’ve been to Chai four times, and I’ve enjoyed the food on every visit. The dishes are delicious, though the portions are a bit small. The chef really excels at fried foods—the sweet and sour pork and fish come highly recommended. The fried rice is a bit too oily for my taste, but it’s good for sharing with others. One downside is the slow service, so it’s best to go when you’re not in a rush. Other than that, I definitely recommend it!

The food at Chai is wonderful, and that’s the only aspect I enjoy. But, the service left much to be desired. We were twice asked to wrap up our leftovers, even though one of our guests was still eating and drinking. In our culture, interrupting someone while they are drinking (especially alcohol) is considered very rude. After we paid the bill, the server “politely” asked us to leave, even though we had only been there for an hour. We understood that many people were waiting, and we were preparing to leave, but being asked three times spoiled the mood. Interestingly, the manager told us we could stay as long as we wanted to enjoy the food, yet others asked us to leave. This experience was disappointing, especially since I had brought my parents. I won’t be recommending Chai to others anymore.

I love it here! When I first saw this restaurant on social media, I knew I wanted to share it with others. I hosted a birthday celebration here and the staff was super friendly and accommodating, the food was delicious, and the location was super convenient as it’s in the (somewhat) calmer parts of Times Square. Their seafood bisque, plum tea, and adorable little bunny desserts are a favorite! The restaurant itself is also just beautiful. Great for small group and large group gatherings, but also great atmosphere for 2!

One of my very favorite Chinese restaurant in Manhattan! True Beijing taste – although many of my Chinese friends do not know what true Beijing home food taste like. The comfortable setting and the fine trained chef from Beijing just make this place so special! It’s not what your think of fake Beijing duck place – but many traditional Beijing home cooking items in beautiful preparation.

Delicious meal in an intimate and almost fine-dining setting. There are 2 levels and we were seated on second floor. Our server, Xiomin was attentive and professional, quickly getting us what we order and need.

The food itself is tasty and different, especially for someone having Beijing style food for the first time. Price is standard for NYC and our favorite dish was Signature Seafood Bisque that is basic but hit the right spot. Recommend as a must visit restaurant!

The homemade plum juice from here is a must-try! Went with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday and we shared several dishes but I was too busy eating and forgot to take photos again until the bunny dessert at the end… haha. The meatball, fried shrimp, and spicy beef were my favorites from what I can remember of the main dishes we ordered. The atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. We sat upstairs and the area was beautifully decorated with many traditional Chinese elements incorporated within. It was the perfect spot for a fancy lunch with friends. Can’t wait to visit again.

Very nice place for hangout with friends. We had some Beijing style cuisine with some fusion dishes. Specially, they don’t have Beijing’s roasted duck. Highly recommend to have seafood soup and eggplants.

The interior design presenting the traditional Chinese architecture style, lot of wood and brick. Yeah… some of the wood seats are not really comfortable.

The staffs are friendly. Recommend arrive early to get the waiting line, they don’t take reservation.

The only restaurant in NYC that can be called Beijing cuisine, with some popular classic Chinese dishes on the menu. Not sure if they have a Michelin star, but I can tell their decor, platting, and service try to reflect the standards. It’s not quite a Chinese place you go daily for a quick bite or to get General Tso. We went for a Saturday lunch. The reservation requires $100 no-show fee to hold the table, so we just tried our luck and went directly as walk-in, but right at noon, when they open. We were seated on the first floor. First, we tried to order cocktails but they weren’t selling them for lunch time. We would have to go back for dinner some other time. Then, for the beer menu, not all were available either. The customers in the restaurants are mainly young Chinese people. And from my observation, they rarely ordered alcoholic drinks but spent money on big portion dishes. That’s probably why. They don’t sell whole Peking Duck anymore – only duck bites. Some other authentic Beijing dish I tried to order, like Brown sugar pancake, was no longer sold either. Overall, we liked all the dishes we ordered, except for the sweet sour whole fish (had better somewhere else). And again, this is probably the only place in town I can get some hometown food. We paid $80 per person with tax and tips – not bad at all for the high-end Chinese restaurant in the city.

The restaurant setting is really nice and definitely can see the owner of the restaurant have a lot of thoughts on the branding. I saw a some very enlightening drinks they created. For our visit, we ordered the restaurant week for one person and meatballs and Qianlong cabbage. The food presentation is really good. However, the taste is just average in my mind. Still recommend this place if you want to find some nice place to chill with friends.

I am on a mission of finding hidden Gems in NY and this restaurant had good reviews. Wanted to find out for myself and we made a reservation for dinner. Upon arrival pleasantly surprised by the quaint ambiance and it was packed. There are about ten tables to seat a variety of x number of people. The upstairs was fully booked for a larger group of 10. We had to wait about 15 min before we got seated. The hostess was very caring and lovely. While we waited(standing) we went through the menu. The dished are typical for the Beiing region. I am more fond of Cantonese. We ordered several dishes, shrimp fried rice, pea shoots, salt and pepper prawn etc. We had high hopes, but this is my honest experience and will not be returning. The shrimp fried rice had only 4 small shrimps. We asked the waitress and she said yes the shrimp are cut and showed us pieces of carrots, claiming those were shrimp. Plus the rice was very blant. The pea shoots were also very blant and some of the stems were really tough to chew. The shrimp looked amazing and presented lovely. Upon first bite it appeared to be fried with skin and all. They tasted great except for the skin( not used to eating shrimp this way). We also had a braised pork belly, which was about the only good dish. So sorry, but we are foodies and unfortunately left most of the food untouched. If one prefers quiet this is not the place to be. Just our luck we had someone sitting next to us who tried talking and laughing louder than all the chatter in the restaurant.
