Catch at The Old Fish Market which is right above Hatch on the Harbour
Located in a Grade II-listed building on the harbour, this restaurant is led by Chef Patron Ben Champkin.
It is widely considered as one of the best seafood destinations in the South West.
We have had Catch on our list for sometime.
As we were staying in Bournemouth we decided to have a drive over for Christmas Eve lunch.
They were serving their three course set lunch £45.
Dark wholemeal sourdough served with a very moorish
Portland brown crab parfait.
Followed by a simple but delicious,Weymouth bay prawns & raw sea bass, pickled carrot & cider.
The main was a beautiful Sea bass in butter sauce.
With side dishes,Crispy potato, salted sea bass & wild garlic capers.Crown prince squash, rosemary brown butter & apple cider vinegar,Chettle Blistered brassicas, kimchi & yoghurt.
Dessert was a delightful Burnt honey crème caramel, apple & oat.
The emphasis here is on locally sourced produce.
Even down to listing every fisherman and supplier on their menu.
Staff were attentive and welcoming.
This is a true sea to plate dining experience at exceptional value for the high standard of cooking.
It’s is well worth a visit.
Arriving at 6:10pm, we were the second table to be seated. Throughout the night, we noticed that the timings of the tables were staggered to take the pressure off the kitchen.
Once seated, the experience was sublime. We had a great view of the kitchen; it was fantastic to see how they worked together and how each dish was put together.
We had the tasting menu with wine flight. Really good to see that the ingredients are all locally sourced; even to the level of what boat the fish comes from!
Stand outs from the menu were the cheeses and exclusive honey that they produce. The octopus was sensational.
Nothing was too much trouble and the r had an extremely enjoyable evening. Highly recommend.
Each dish we had was a careful blend of tastes and textures which each added to the joy of the ongoing meal. The starter main and dessert are £50 a head with 3 glasses of wine each adding about £32 a head to that so not with coffees etc £82 each excluding tip
Was it value for money ? Absolutely
Was the service good ? Let down ony by the male waiter who did all the right things explaining how the menu worked what the dishes were and the wine types , unfortunately no one in our group could understand him so we asked the waitress to go over it again.
Other than this minor hiccup the service was top notch.
Ambiance , nice cutlery tables chairs and feel of the place all good.
My best meal of the last 2 years and I would highly recommend a vist.
Special mention to the wine pairing as well; the quality of the 2 wines, English Sparkling Rose, Tokaij and English apple brandy were great value for money and will be looking to buy some for myself. Go as much as you can.
