I loved the aesthetic, definitely a very unique and special place. Also, the acoustics were fantastic! The restaurant was packed to the brim and we could still speak in low voices, hear each other perfectly, and could hear the background music. It all felt very well thought out and was the perfect experience. I really can’t say enough about this little gem tucked into downtown South Berwick! We are happy you’re here, Catbird, thanks for helping us celebrate our anniversary!
The wine selection was flawless, each glass perfectly complementing the dishes, and the food? Don’t get me started on the food. Simply incredible. Every dish was a true masterpiece, bursting with flavors that reflect the care and love Josh puts into his cooking.
What really makes Catbird stand out, though, is the energy. The seamless combination of great food, warm hospitality, and genuine love for what they do. I’m already counting down the days until my next visit. Catbird is an experience you won’t forget. (Make sure you get the caviar Pringles and harissa carrots!!)
Love coming out to Catbird!
The food was incredible and the whole vibe is awesome. Equally great for a romantic date night and a casual friend hang at the bar. We’ll be back…probably every week!
Let’s get to the positives which made our time at this restaurant exceptional:
• Atmosphere: cool, bespoke, great music (any time I hear White Stripes as I’m eating dinner I’m happy — I’ve loved that band since high school). I love how they remained true to the space but also infused it with their personality. I liked the color choices for the accent walls and art as well.
• Service: Joel was our server and I think he might just be the best server we’ve ever had! I used to work in the restaurant industry and I know serving can be tough, especially on busy nights such as holidays, but he was just as friendly and personable to us as he was everyone else in his section. The funniest part of the evening was when my husband couldn’t finish his dessert, and was like “I can’t finish this.” Without missing a beat, Joel replied “Not with that attitude you can’t!” we really appreciated his humor, and his ability to pick up on what we wanted without much fuss. He’s an awesome addition to the team. The other staff members we encountered were friendly too.
• Food: saving the best for last! We loved the menu’s uncomplicated approach and nuanced delivery. Little details can make or break a dish. The seasoning on everything was perfect. From the pickled radish to the farro that accompanied my husband’s chicken – it was all wonderful. There were little surprises of flavor throughout the dishes we tried. Recommended: fried enoki mushrooms, bone marrow, little gem salad, cheese plate, roasted chicken and roasted cauliflower. Their drink program is well rounded too, I ended up trying a glass of orange rosé (so good!) and a cocktail (Incident Report).
Overall, I would say this place ranks high with two other restaurants which are very near and dear to me – White Mountain Cider Company (Bartlett, NH) and Winona’s (Camden, ME).
If you haven’t gone yet, and have been debating, give Catbird a try – for it! I’m just glad to see this space being occupied again and I hope to return for many more date nights…and perhaps a burger night or two!
I started with a beautifully made martini paired with a cringle caviar chip, which felt like such a thoughtful touch, especially for a celebration. What a fabulous way to begin a meal.
For appetizers, I ordered six local oysters served extremely cold with a lovely shallot mignonette — absolutely delicious. My friend ordered the biscuit and ham, and we both instantly fell in love with it. The biscuits are baked fresh daily and are honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. The ham is no ordinary ham either — thinly sliced, delicate, and almost Italian in style. The combination was unforgettable.
Everything we tried was wonderful, and I already can’t wait to go back and work my way through the menu. Catbird is a fantastic addition to the area and made my birthday feel truly special.
Our server, Jessica, was a perfect fit: attentive and instinctive, professional yet relaxed and genuinely friendly. The atmosphere of the building is vastly improved over its predecessors—warm, inviting, and comfortable. There’s clear attention to the details that really matter, creating a place where all the elements come together for a wonderful experience.
