Not a bad joint. The food was decent but nothing you couldn’t have made at home. The drinks were a bit small, weak, and lacking effort–Bloody Mary’s were basic at best. The service was certainly adequate, and it didn’t take long to receive our food. The appeal is, the location relative to other eateries. When your on the lake, and don’t want to travel far, it’ll do.

My buddies and I fish on Mille Lacs every Memorial day weekend, so we expect the resorts and the few restaurants in the area to be somewhat busy. We normally would go to a different place that we’ve been going to for a couple of years but they were closed. So we thought “let’s try Castaways.” Saturday morning we went for breakfast. The atmosphere was nice, cool little bar restaurant set up with a cabin style feel. Staff was polite and quick to take our orders. My order was great, I had zero complaints. My 2 buddies were not pleased with their food. They both said the eggs tasted old, and the Ham was like chewing on rubber. But we paid and left thinking maybe it was just an off day. So we went back the next day and it was packed, we were able to get a table pretty easily but the place filled up to capacity quick. I understand that everyone is short staffed and it was also a holiday weekend but you’d think as a resort/bar restaurant you’d be prepared for a busy holiday weekend. They were not. It took 45 minutes for them to take our orders and some people waited even longer. A lot of people left before and after ordering because of the wait time or their orders getting screwed up. The staff was very polite and kept their cool even with the chaos. And the bus boy was flying around that place to get tables open quickly. Our food once it arrived was still not great and also expensive for what you get. Not a whole lot of options either. Again I understand that staffing shortage is an issue these days and food supplies are limited. But I would hate to see a cool place like this close or lose business over minor details that can be adjusted. I’m sure this place is great any other time. Give it a whirl if you’re in the area, maybe it was just that weekend.

Food is decent but going to the actual bar for service is non existent unless you are a regular. Honestly, a simple “hello” or “one moment” would be welcoming to make sure you have been seen/acknowledged. The patrons are usually all very friendly. This is one place I want to love but it is difficult with the ‘anger’ or ‘overworked, under paid’ attitudes that play through.
