I attempted to purchase beer, something I have done many times before without any issues. The attendant requested identification, and I provided my valid South African driver’s license, which clearly shows my age—I am over 30 years old. Because the license is not American, it did not scan. I then asked what other form of identification I could provide.
At that point, the attendant became visibly agitated to the extent that it appeared they were about to have a medical episode. Their reaction was extremely unprofessional and inappropriate, especially with other customers standing behind me, which made the situation very embarrassing.
I believe this individual should not be in a customer-facing position if they are unable to handle routine interactions professionally. Additionally, Casey’s should ensure that staff are trained to read a date of birth on a driver’s license, even if it is foreign, and the company should have a process to accommodate legal foreign residents who are of age and wish to purchase alcohol.
Cases like this cause you to lose customers, and I hope this concern is taken seriously.
Attendant(I can’t say he or she because I’m unsure what they are trying to be)…tall, hair bun….doesn’t belong serving the public. Cordial etiquette is a must and “they” lack it . This place certainly needs a visit from the state health department.,…and should have it’s operational license suspended. If what we can see is this filthy I would hate to see the back or inside the ice machine or the auger of the soft serve. In fact maybe I’ll order that visit from the state for you. Maybe hair bun person should show at least the minimum acceptable level of courtesy next time someone chooses to spend hard earned money at this amateur establishment
I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with the treatment I received at the Casey’s store located in Hillsboro, North Dakota.
On my visit to the store, I attempted to purchase 12 beers and 2 Cokes. As per standard protocol, I was asked for identification at the age of 33, and I provided my valid South African identification card. The employee attempted to scan it but was unsuccessful. He then asked for an alternative form of ID, and I handed him my South African driver’s license, which also did not scan. He then asked if I had a North Dakota ID, which I do not, and informed me that he would not be able to sell me the beer. I accepted that and told him I would just purchase the Cokes instead.
As he prepared to ring up the soft drinks, I calmly asked what had changed, as I have previously been able to purchase alcohol at Casey’s using the same identification. Without warning, he slammed both of his fists on the counter and told me that if I continued to argue with him, he would “chase me out.” I remained calm and repeated that I only wished to purchase the Cokes. He then abruptly escalated the situation, saying I must leave the store and refusing to complete the sale—all while other customers were present, which made the situation unnecessarily embarrassing and hostile.
I understand that employees must follow company policy regarding ID verification, but I found his behavior to be unnecessarily aggressive, unprofessional, and disrespectful. As a customer, I expect to be treated with dignity and courtesy, regardless of the circumstances.
I would appreciate it if you could investigate this matter and ensure that appropriate action is taken. I also suggest reinforcing training on how to handle such situations professionally and respectfully, especially when dealing with international IDs and non-resident customers.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns. I look forward to your response and to seeing improvements at this location.
Sincerely,
Franco
