Short version: I was served dirty dishes, had to move seats because of roaches, couldn’t leave because they had card reader issues, and paid $250 for that kind of experience.
Long version: I gave it some time before writing this so I could be as objective as possible about this. They had a Valentine’s Day dinner special which came out to about $200. I had no issue with this because I understood this was a place of quality so I figured it was a reasonable price for two people. Upon arriving it was very nice inside, and the staff were friendly and very helpful. My first issue was that they had a drink menu written out on a note pad and only after I ordered something did they tell me it was not included in the original $200. That’s fine, so I got something for my partner and two waters one for each of us. $50. Okay, I am annoyed but I understand, drinks are expensive, but I don’t personally agree with charging $10 for water. Our drinks arrive and my glass is very visibly dirty. I am not one to complain so I first just started to wipe it myself with the napkin they gave us but it wasn’t coming out as it was crusted over. My partner suggests I just ask for a new one so I do. The waitress was very kind, apologized and brought me a new one. This one was clearly attempted to have been washed but still dirty. I mentioned it again and the waitress attempted to wipe it herself, and it remained dirty but I was not going to ask them to bring me a third one.
Our food arrived and I can’t complain, it was delicious, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Unfortunately that memory is tainted as, while my partner and I were eating, she said she had spotted a cockroach. I didn’t initially see it so I was a bit skeptical. A moment later I saw it crawl across the counter we were sat against and I called the waitress over to ask if we could be moved because there was a live roach. She seemed a bit shocked and again much to her credit she moved us to another table and apologized. At this point my partner and I had lost most of our appetite because it’s hard to imagine between the roaches and the dirty dishes what else could have crawled on our food in their kitchen. At this point we were eager to take our leave and so we asked for the bill. They took my card and apparently there were some technical difficulties with their card reader, so we sat there quite uncomfortably as we watched almost everyone else leave for about 30-45 minutes extra only for them to tell me they couldn’t use my card and that they would send me an invoice to pay through my phone. I am very disappointed because I heard good things but I could not have expected all that happened. Not a very romantic valentines evening eh? Despite their good food and their kind waitress, I don’t think I could recommend this place.
ANYWAYS. We decided to just go again and see what happens. Located in a very run down part of the city, as soon as you walk in though the doors, you’re in another place. You forget about the outside world. The atmosphere is the best part. I’ll go as far as to say “The best in Laredo”. The food was great too.
The chicken and shrimp sherry/lemon/buttery sauce is to to die for! The Lopez plate, presented in what I think is an oak barrel plate, had a nice blend of cold meats, cheese, and olives. Spicy potatoes could have been a bit spicier, but still inviting. I loved the calamari. All washed down with a pitcher of refreshing Sangria. We shared a Flan just to try it out. Not a bad way of topping dinner off. The portions were good. Just note that the flan is more of a personal size. Service wasn’t as good as the food, but hey it’s laredo. We ran low on our water, and took about 30mins to pick up the tab (the card was sticking out and at the edge of the table for that long) There was maybe 5 tables tops, so I don’t see what excuse they would use for overseeing this. We didn’t mind, again the Live music was welcoming.
As we existed the doors, we were Slapped in the face with the stench of raw sewerage. It basically said “Welcome back to Laredo’s downtown” I can’t blame them for this. This is a city problem. The Bars on It street, the Tack room, etc they all suffer from this… So if you’re looking for a romantic dinner with live entertainment, and excellent food, AND are unfortunate enough to be stuck in Laredo, I highly recommend Casa Lopez. Great Work Guys!!
It’s a shame, this place is beautiful but it just lacks some details to make it great.
