Casa Kenji is a modern Japanese–Spanish/Latin restaurant rooted in fire, flavor, and seasonality. Led by Chef Bigler Cruz, our cuisine blends Japanese precision with the bold, soulful spirit of Latin cooking—brought to life over binchotan charcoal and open flame. Casa Kenji brings these influences together: fire-driven cooking, clean Japanese flavors, vibrant Latin energy, and a commitment to exceptional, seasonal products. Our menu showcases hand-crafted sushi, seasonal omakase, smoky tapas, and seafood-focused dishes using top-quality fish from around the world. Our cocktail program highlights sake, Japanese whisky, and other Japanese spirits, crafted to complement both our bright, citrus-driven flavors and our rich, fire-kissed dishes.

The happy hour is worth rushing to from 4-6 every day. $4 off rolls and all cocktails, $25 tuna flights, and $2 dressed east coast oysters – sign me up!
If you’re looking for great sushi in Houston with a solid happy hour, fresh oysters, and high-quality fish, this spot is definitely worth checking out.
Valet is available but there’s a lot available across the way ~ also Clarkwood is next door!
The binchotan and tataki were standouts as well, with the wagyu tataki being especially memorable: rich, clean, and expertly prepared. The pacing of the meal was perfect, they truly took their time.
Each dish came out in a timely fashion, and they waited until we finished one course before bringing the next. Every dish was also clearly explained, which added to the overall experience.
The menu feels creative without being pretentious, and you can tell how much care goes into both the ingredients and the technique. Can’t wait to come back and explore more, highly recommend.
Taste:
all the Shiromi(White fish) and Hikarimono (Silver-Skin fish) are super fresh from Toyosu Japan. Nirigi are affordable for this type of River Oaks location.
Grilled Dish: Very well seasoned, beautiful display and smokiness is the highlight that I love it especially Akaushi Hot Rock.
Dessert? Man, Toffee Mochi was the one that my Wife loveeeeee and die for.
Shout out to Montserrat and the team for being helpful to make guests enjoy the atmosphere and beyond!!!
Will come back eventually.
On the positive side, the restaurant decor is beautiful — modern, chic, and very Instagram-friendly. The server was friendly once we actually got service and checked in on us regularly afterward. And to be fair, the food we did receive was tasty and well-prepared.
That said, the experience had some pretty frustrating issues. After being seated, no one came to take our drink or appetizer orders for a solid 15 minutes. It genuinely felt like we were forgotten. Not a great first impression.
When we finally started ordering, we kept hearing, “We don’t have this today… we don’t have that today.” After a few rounds of that, we had to ask, “Can you just tell us what you do have?” That was awkward and made ordering feel more difficult than it needed to be.
The biggest letdown, however, was the food size. Even items labeled as “entrees” arrived looking more like small bites. Everything was delicious, but gone almost immediately — literally a few bites and it was over. Don’t be fooled by the photos; they photograph beautifully, but they are much smaller than expected for the price.
One slightly amusing side note: I’m pretty sure Hilal was seated next to us. We watched them try (and fail) to fix a very wobbly table for a while — which kind of summed up the night.
Overall, Casa Kenji looks great and has potential, but between the slow start, limited availability, and tiny servings, it didn’t quite deliver. With better pacing, clearer menu availability, and more substantial dishes, this could be a much stronger experience.
Only criticism we have is that the service was running a bit slow between dishes. It took a good 10-15 minutes between each course, of which we had 6.
