Service and atmosphere:
Atmosphere was good. Nice music, great views of the river walk, however, this is where it ends.
Service was not the best. The staff gave impression that they couldn’t be bothered and were not attentive at all. We had to ask for small plates for starters, silverware, and napkins.
Food and drinks:
Sangria was good but, again, arrived way after the stater was served and we had to ask the waitress to check on the drinks.
Tacos were okay. Carnitas taco was dry but salsa helped to moisten it a bit.
We had to cancel the order of chips and guacamole and slaw as we waited more than 40 minutes for it.
There is no excuse for waiting this long for chips and guacamole!
Pricing:
Average.
Unfortunately, I don’t recommend this place.
The tacos al pastor tasted more like carnitas with a subtle al pastor marinade—essentially carnitas with a hint of that classic pineapple-chili flavor, rather than traditional al pastor. The carne asada tacos were solid: flavorful meat that wasn’t overly greasy. That said, the prices feel premium due to the prime River Walk location—you could find similar quality at a local taqueria or food truck for less.
The margaritas were a highlight! The frozen/slushy versions were sweetly refreshing, while the on-the-rocks ones were perfectly balanced and outstanding. We finished with the tres leches cake, which was delicious—clearly made in-house with fresh, real fruit toppings.
Service from our waiter was friendly and efficient, exactly what you’d expect, and food arrived quickly despite the busy New Year’s Eve crowd. Overall, a pleasant experience with great drinks and dessert, though the food was good but not exceptional for the price point.
We loved it, the staff the decor The food. Keep in mind its not a huge menu but what we picked worked just fine. The strawberry margaritas hits the spot.
We will be coming back again.
My spouse can tolerate cold food and hates to complain, but also felt it was unacceptable. I personally will not eat cold meat, especially when I’m paying $21 for a fajita plate. I even offered for the waitress to touch the meat herself to confirm how cold it was.
Our waitress, Monica P, was excellent: apologetic, attentive, and proactive. She immediately informed the kitchen and manager advocating for us
The issue was management.
Despite being told our food was cold, the manager (Ruby) avoided our table, made eye contact, turned away, and passed by multiple times without addressing us.
There was no attempt to de-escalate, take ownership, or properly recover the experience.
The fajitas were remade and came out hot, but the beans and rice were still cold, even the second time. Does Casa Catrina serve cold beans and rice as a normal practice?
Only after my family had finished eating did the manager finally stop by with a generic, “Is everything okay?” As she turned to walk away, I had to call her back and ask if she’d been informed that all of our food originally came out cold. She said, “Yes, we are very apologetic,” and mentioned they’d be taking something off my chicken fajita plate.
$2.10 was taken off the bill essentially my military discount which felt dismissive given the situation.
Monica P deserves recognition. She was the only reason this didn’t completely blow up. She handled the situation professionally and with empathy. I truly hope servers don’t have to tip out managers like this.
Dressing cute and walking around the floor isn’t management. She needs training.
Good management shows accountability, guest engagement, and service recovery. None of that happened here. Monica P did her job well; management did not.
I won’t be returning.
The food is where Casa Catrina really shines. The flavors are bold and authentic, with fresh ingredients that make every dish stand out. The tacos were packed with flavor, the salsa had just the right kick, and the house margaritas paired perfectly with the meal. Everything tasted homemade and thoughtfully prepared.
One of the best parts of the night was sharing the experience with LeeLee and Ava. LeeLee couldn’t stop talking about how good the enchiladas were, and Ava was completely sold on the guacamole—it was creamy, fresh, and easily one of the best starters on the menu. The three of us ended up passing plates around the table just so everyone could try a bit of everything.
The service was also friendly and attentive without feeling rushed. The staff checked in often enough to make sure we had everything we needed while still giving us plenty of time to enjoy the meal and conversation.
Overall, Casa Catrina delivered a great mix of delicious food, welcoming service, and a fun atmosphere. Whether you’re going with friends, family, or just looking for a lively place to grab great Mexican food, it’s definitely a spot worth visiting.
