The dining room is beautiful—a spacious yet modern renovation of an old warehouse. Another reviewer posted pictures of the dining room, so there was no need to repeat that.
The server was a friendly and welcoming. Drink orders arrived quickly. Our entrees were:
American Burger ($13), Cowboy Burger ($15) and Old Fashioned Chopped Streak.
She told us that preparation of the steak and burgers might take a little longer than expected. Truthfully the food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, but I appreciated her forewarning us.
Chips and salsa was provided like any mexican restaurant. Nothing special here. I prefer more rustic salsa, but my wife was quite happy with their very basic mild salsa.
Here’s the rundown on our entrees. The chop steak was a reasonable sized portion covered with brown gravy and two side dishes. My mother-in-law said it was quite good.
Her sides were a roasted creamy corn served with tortilla chip and broccoli. The roasted corn was okay. The smoky, roasted flavor of the corn did not integrate into the creamy sauce. She definitely did not like the broccoli. It was minimally cooked and seasoned with a touch of butter and Italian seasoning. I tried a little and have to agree the flavor and minimal cooking was disappointing.
The two different burgers were served on brioche buns and were accompanied with a large order of well seasoned french fries. The burgers were good, but the fries were the best part of the meal. I think that the hamburger patties were too small. I would have been much happier if the order of fries was half as much and the hamburger patty was a little larger.
Bottomline, I wanted to give a strong endorsement, but I can’t. Looking over the rest of the menu, the most of the plated entrees ranged from $18 to $22. Steaks were priced at $28 and above which is concerning for a small, moderate income town like Pulaski. I guess they are counting on the traveling guests of the colocated hotel pay those prices. Nonetheless to be fair, we will give it another try in a few months to see how it matures.
The worst part of the evening was when the manager walked over, annoyed at her staff, and asked us to describe the waiter we had. We had trouble describing her physically, but the manager kept asking us to describe her physical characteristics – kept pressing us – and then asked us if she was Mexican. Then she wanted us to point her out in the room! Just a very awkward experience, highly unprofessional, and it demonstrated to me that whatever problem the staff is having is actually the manager’s fault. I wouldn’t want to work for that person. I felt bad for the wait staff! This white woman was treating her staff from different ethnic backgrounds in a derogatory manner like they were children. If your staff is struggling, don’t throw them under the bus. That’s your problem if you’re a manager. Don’t blame them. I have no respect for that.
I hope this place can improve, because it seems like a good restaurant would be good for this little town. Here’s to hoping it gets better with management that doesn’t throw their staff under the bus while making derogatory statements about their ethnicity.
Our visit started with confusion before we entered. An “Open” sign is in the window of what appears to be the entrance, but is not. The entrance is the same as it was with the previous restaurant. A woman, who I assume was the Manager, stepped out the door and invited us in. It appeared as though the staff was paying close attention to their customers. Sadly, that was the last time I felt that way.
The Hostess was polite, leading us to our table and placing the menus and silverware appropriately. As we opened the menus, they were covered in a sticky film, as though they had both been covered with soda or food from the previous customers. A staff member brought out chips and salsa – both of which were fine, but not great – and replaced our menus when we alerted her to the issue.
Our waitress came soon after to take our drink orders. Her approach seemed odd, stepping to us after checking on the table next to us. She did not extend a welcome of any kind, only asking what we would like to drink. We order our drinks and an appetizer. The drinks and appetizers both arrived in an appropriate amount of time. The appetizer – chicken wings with dry rub – were a little over cooked. Despite this, I thought that maybe the experience was getting better. Again, I was wrong.
The Manager then came out with a mixed drink from the bar, asking my wife and I, as well as several tables around us, if we had ordered it. Eventually, she returned to the bar with the drink and sat it down, seeming unable to locate who ordered it. After this, I started to observe the staff closer. Confusion seemed to be the main item on the menu.
About 10 minutes later, the Hostess began making here way around the dinning room, checking on each table. We had not had a visit from our Waitress since the drink/appetizer order, so I told the Hostess that we would like to order our food. She stated that she would let our waitress know and walked back to her location by the front door.
We waited another 15 minutes and no one came to take our order. Eventually, I walked over to the Hostess and told her that we would like the check. The Hostess created our check, brought it over, and I gave her my credit card. After several minutes – much longer than it should have been – the Waitress finally returned to our table with the check. At this point I fully expected some sort of apology for the lack of professionalism – nothing crazy, just maybe an “I’m so sorry” – but I was wrong. Instead, the Waitress waited at the table as I signed the check, trying to make small talk.
The entire experience was so disappointing. I hope that the owners and staff actually read these reviews and take steps to correct these deficiencies.
