It’s hard to go wrong with anything on the menu. The food is not the typical super cheesy Tex-Mex. It seems to be more authentic Mexican food (but they still have great queso!). The mole is phenomenal! Elotes are another do not miss!
I’m not a huge mezcal fan. The smoke aspect to it isn’t my thing, but they have great mezcal and non-mezcal drinks. The margarita of the day was massive!
The overall cost is a little more expensive than some other Mexican restaurants, but we felt it was worth it.
The inside and outside of the restaurant are very well designed with lots of cool stuff. The ambiance in the back with the lights is excellent!
I disagree.
It’s great food, great drinks, friendly staff, and a RELAXED atmosphere. Does the staff rush around, take your order, rush back with food, etc?? No. They DO take their time with each table, explain specials, ask about your evening, etc. No one is dogging it here. We had a great time, stayed and talked a long time, talked to 2 or 3 of the waitstaff, the bartender, one of the band members. This is a Mexican family atmosphere. No rush, let’s talk.
Small store front, the a classic pick up truck in front with a neon “OPEN” sign in it. Come in to a bar area and indoor seating, band in the corner. Friendly bartender got chips and guacamole with an AMAZING salsa made with poblano, and guajillo, and Serrano peppers, burst with flavor and heat on the back end. Muy sabor!
We waited to be seated in the open back area. About 15 minutes, which went by fast with a great band to listen to.
Had a cute young lady server (Allison), who gave us the rundown on the specials, and made us fell welcome (as did the bartender in front).
We tried a flight of mescal, which is 4 shots of mescal from various regions. Durango, Guerrero, one mixed with Tamarindo, and one I can’t remember (lol). Very different flavors, and fun to try. They also have a huge selection of tequilas.
THE FOOD: I had the Borrega de Oro (lamb marinated in tequila cooked in banana leaves with grilled nopalitos and cebolitas. Tender meat, very tasty… with nopalitos on a corn tortilla was delicious. This is great stuff. Classic and well prepared. My friend who would be my gf, had chille rellenos. Traditionally made and very flavorful. Both entrees were reasonably priced and well worth it.
Overall I can’t say enough about the experience. If you look at my other reviews, you will see if don’t give 5 stars often. The food, music, atmosphere, drinks, staff and feeling of welcomeness push this over the edge.
And I didn’t even talk about the walls covered with kitschy items to look at.
The washrooms are clean and omnisex (for use by anyone). Good to see.
