Carolina Smoke is a top destination for BBQ near me in Morganton, located just off I-40 at Exit 105. We serve in-house smoked pork, brisket, and chicken, hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, specialty buffets, burgers, Philly’s, and our famous gigantic stuffed taters—plus one of the area’s largest soup and salad bars.

We have shown this place a lot of grace. We have gone on average of once a week for the past 6 months. There used to be patrons lined out the door everyday, but that has ended and it is easy to understand why. During the last six months or so, they have had an extremely high turnover rate with their staff. The food which used to be stellar, is going downhill steadily. The current sanitation rating is in the tank. The place is generally grungy with the tables not being properly cleaned. They make mistakes on orders regularly and the management is unwilling to compensate when they mess something up. This type of poor business practice does not inspire confidence. The last time we went there, we were served a wrong dish and had to wait an hour and a half for the other. So my date had completely finished his wrong order, while I sat there with nothing to eat. By the time my food did come I asked for a box. The food was smaller portions than it has been in the past for the same order and was extremely greasy. We ask if they were willing to knock some off of the bill and they begrudgingly knocked off ten percent, but failed to apologize for our ruined dinner or for wasting our time. They also regularly remove negative comments from their facebook posts. Apparently they think they’re the same as they used to be. They are not. I do not know if the management has changed or what has happened to make this such a pit now, but my loyalty has now ended, and I will not be back. There are too many good places to eat in town to give them another chance. So long Carolina Smoke. It’s not me, It’s you!

We drove 70 miles there and 70 miles back home. I did not even think to do photos. Our server was very friendly helpful kept out quart mason jars full of soda and tea. I did not do legs. My better half did. Everything I ate in the bar was good. Better half said the legs were over cook not much in them. Normally she eats 3 to 4 clusters. She took out 8 to try and get the mean she normally would. A lot of the shells she crack did not have anything in them. Be both admired some stake we saw people eating. They looked good. The soup was good but watery. Salad fish shrimp other options on the bar even bbq. Sides were good. They keep it filled up. I liked the ice scream. I did not see any cones. But I normally eat mine in a bowl anyway.Glad we got there early. When we left people were waiting to get in. With tip the bill was 100 and some change for the two of us which was not bad. Probbly a one time experience for us. For locals I’m sure this is a good option. Saw it in Facebook been planing for a long time time off work to take the better half for the crab legs.

Server was great. Basically set up to fail, she was new.
Short staffed on the night we came. Maybe the owner should be there helping?
Steak special wasn’t special, mine was fine but my husband had to spit out practically every bite because it was mostly gristle.
The salad bar was in terrible shape. I will attach the onions and how they were just hacked and thrown in.
We have been disappointed almost to the point of not coming back. First it was the Saturday Crableg cost went up as high as if we were at Captain George’s, but they don’t offer what Captain George’s offers.
Then this night. We were told not to bother going but I was insisting we try it. I hated telling my husband he was right, BUT here I am .
I actually didn’t want to leave a review after seeing the owner’s responses to others. Very unprofessional and disappointing. Criticism is good and can be a teaching moment to fix what is broken.
Everything can be fixed.

My family had a wonderful experience using the party room. Holly, our waitress was amazing, patient, and very prompt to get everything we needed. Job very well done, and we will requedt her as we have a big family and Carolina Smoke will now be our restaurant of choice. Summer behind, behind the bar was amazing as well. Drinks were on point and she was alot of fun. The food was definitely 10/10. Everyone was so happy, full, and comfortable. If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I would.

Oysters were very good, just not a lot for the price. We ordered the catfish grilled, I think they made a mistake and served us tilapia instead. Corn was fresh from the farm. Service was on point.

We have ordered here several times and the past few times they have been well below par. It’s like they aren’t paying attention to the orders that come in. Like this last time I sent in an online order for 2 taters, a chocolate overdose, and a strawberry shortcake. When I went to pick it up I was given 1 tater at the bar to pick up, then had to wait another 10 minutes because “the cooks didn’t realize there was 2 instead of 1.” Then I was told that they no longer have strawberry shortcake and “we have told them to take it off the menu”. I was substituted a strawberry cheesecake which is fine. I had to wait more time for the cheesecake to be put together. Finally I got all the food that I had ordered or was substituted, and was sent on my way. I get home and start plating the food which there were no issues until I got to the chocolate overdose which looks like they had put ice-cream on it and in turn made it chocolate overdose soup. Needless to say it wasn’t eaten because it was a soggy mess. The cheesecake was good though.

This was one of the first restaurants I was taken to when I moved to NC. This is a true BBQ joint. They have a great menu with all kinds of different options and a buffet. BBQ is honestly not one of my favorites but their food is yummy. Their baked potatoes are HUGE. Like the size of a plate! They have a buffet option with fabulous sides, I love their Mac and cheese! The part I loved most here was their cocktails, all with a moonshine base
I don’t have any pictures but this place is big, rustic and they have some covered outside seating.

Fernando was our server and he did an amazing job! He talked us into the buffet and lemme just say it was awesome! Brazilian style buffet with the meats and no cheap cuts!! Prime rib, scallops, teriyaki chicken, pulled pork, some scrumptious shrimp! Totally worth the trip and can’t wait to visit again! One last deal, the shiny ole fashion was amazing!

We went for Saturday night all you can eat seafood buffet. The extra $10 for all you can eat crab legs was a bit disappointing. The legs were dry, but they didn’t run out of them. They did, however, have a hard time keeping perch & BBQ meat & plates they stated the dishwasher was broken. The fried oysters were the best, then the flounder & perch. The coconut shrimp was banging, too. The garlic shrimp and the shrimp scampi were way too much garlic for my taste. They didn’t have much in the way of desserts on the buffet. Banana pudding, soft serve ice cream, and peach cobbler that was gross. The cobbler was made with a glaze, and the peachs was tough from setting over the heated bar. Our waiter was great! He was very nice and attentive. The wait time for 4 people at 6:30 pm wasn’t but a five minute wait. The atmosphere was of a steak house or BBQ style with picnic tables. Overall, it was a great experience and worth the money.
