Plus, the warm, laid-back atmosphere made it even better. This place is definitely a hidden gem for anyone craving authentic Venezuelan comfort food.
Bowl Pabellon Beef: Pabellon is said to be Venezuela’s national dish. Product from this stall was healthy, but not that authentic, or delicious for my Chinese appetite. As the core part, beef was absolutely fabulous, shredded and deep stewed to soft and tender, more on the savory and fragrant side, but also with a zing of tomato’s sourness and paprika’s spice, somehow similar to Mexican style. However, the black beans and banana were a bit overcooked, together with the salad dressing, mixed with the rice, making it overwhelmingly mushy, which was a disaster for me who love dry rice. I have checked through Google and ChatGPT that all ingredients should be placed separately, and obviously, pico de gallo should not be in there.
By the way the food stall is located in a pub or something, where all people were crazily yelling. It is insanely chaotic so you’d better escape asap to protect your heart.
We ordered the Pelua (spiced beef + cheese) and Pork + Pico de Gallo Arepas as well as the Pork Pabellon bowl. The Arepas were fantastic! The beef + cheese arepa satisfied those salty/meaty/cheesy cravings while the pork + pico de gallo was more refreshing. We loved both of them so much. For people who don’t know what an arepa is, it is like a taco sandwich (analogies won’t do this description justice, just try it). With either pork or beef sandwiched between a cornmeal “bun”, the arepa is a fantastic and fun dish that I think people will enjoy!
The bowl was a surprisingly large amount of food for the price, certainly a great deal for all the ingredients included, and had all the same flavors as the arepas. While it was also excellent, we definitely preferred the arepas and will order more of them in the future.
We loved the artistic and relaxed vibe of the courtyard and will certainly return in the future. It is an excellent place to visit with friends and family or on a date! This place is a hidden restaurant wonder and we highly recommend it!!
The location is somewhat hard to find, accessed from the brewery. Also hard to find parking nearby.
The place is quite empty on a weekday around noon. The interiors are somewhat rough, exposed steel structure, not much decor. Also no music, just loud rattling from the big refrigerator.
The food was pretty good but not amazing, and the prices are high. $12 for a small bowl that is not filling, $8.5 for a small arepa (even two would not fill me up for lunch).
And they do not serve water. Bottom line- nice place to try different food, but not good value compared to a taqueria.
I got the pabellon (national dish of Venezuela) chicken, which was pulled chicken with incredible flavor, black beans and fried plantains, both pairing really well with the chicken. Definitely recommend it strongly.
Tried this place again about a year later and it was much better! Arepas were very tasty, and I enjoyed them immensely. I think they are much better at the restaurant than they are for takeout.
Original Review:
Sadly, this place was not my favorite. I love Venezuelan food, so I had high hopes. I’m not sure if we just went on an off day, but there were some major issues. The arepa shells were rock hard. I had a really hard time biting into them. I’m guessing this batch was just overcooked, but it was disappointing. There was also so much filling for the tiny arepa shell it was quite difficult to eat. The tequenas were good, but I wish they came with more sauce. All in all it wasn’t terrible, but I probably wouldn’t go back.
