Was out on the bike and stopped in here for lunch. It looks exactly like a normal gas station when you walk in, but there are a bunch of tables to sit at. The waitress I had was absolutely wonderful. Everybody who worked there was super nice. The food was okay. Better than “gas station food” but not worth going out of the way for *IMO*. I got the Carl’s Burger, which was pretty good. It had a thick patty and plenty of toppings. I got curly fries and onion rings. They were both cooked well and everything was hot. They were both crispy on the outside, as they should be! I got the corn dog nuggets for an appetizer… They tasted like the Walmart brand ones you can get. Which shoulda been expected to be fair .
Corn Dog Nuggets – 5/10
Onion Rings – 6.8/10
Curly Fries – 7/10
Carl’s Burger – 7.3/10

When I go in there, I get giddy. I just KNOW to expect that I’m going to enjoy my meal! The servers are friendly and try to make sure that you always have everything that you need, aren’t pushy-when it comes to ordering, help each other out even, and the food is usually prompt AND accurate, in being served. My eyes roll back into my head, practically, at that first bite of my favorite-their fried tenderloin. It is remarkably the best tenderloin that I have EVER had anywhere. That’s why it’s hard for me to tell you about any of their other foods, except from the experiences of bites of other people’s food from people that I’m with, in like a tasting party. I have tried to order other things, but I usually end up changing my mind and order my usual instead. Only once have I been, when they’d run out of tenderloin. We love it too, that they serve breakfast all day long, which is great (and rare). I keep saying that I want to try their pizza. So, maybe next time, I will buckle down and get some. We shall see!

Ordered a double cheeseburger and potato wedges to go. They had it ready within 15 minutes. The wedges were perfectly crispy and seasoned. The burger was juicy and oozing with cheese. All hot and delicious!

Country cooking is very good. Good breakfast. Small place. Carry 3 octane ratings of non ethanol gas. Easy access for truck and trailered boat…..if it’s not busy.

First of all their gasoline is all Ethanol free.
That is old school.
Now speaking of old school Carls has been serving since the 1940’s.
So they have been in business for the better part of 100 years.
Now if my math and history is correct that is before the lake was impounded.
You dont stay in business if you arent doing something right, everyday, for that many years!
Now the food is good and for about 8.50 you get a burger with everything and fries. And it was excellent!
Service was ok, I think our waitress left after taking our order, we never saw her again. May have been a shift change, hence the 4 stars for service.
All in all it was great food, plenty of parking, and a great local restaurant!
They open early, and they are open for 12 hours plus everyday. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner! They do get very busy, so call ahead if you are in a hurry! And they have a small grocery section and items, if you need to throw down say a zagnut, or Candy bar.
Or get a pack of hot dogs, which by the way are really good!
AND THEY ARE OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK.
WHO EVEN DOES THAT ANYMORE?
Carl’s, Give it a try, you wont be disapointed!
Finally if you are in the area, the Smith Mountain Lake Dam visitor center is close by. Call first or check online for hours of operation.
You are about an hour, from Roanoke, Lynchburg, Bedford, and Martinsville, Rockymount Va are just a hop, skip and a jump!
Look up online WDBJ review and story!
Any questions?

Great place to eat! I just happened to be working nearby so I grabbed a Philly Cheese steak and it was delicious! The young ladies on the early shift were pleasant and cooked well. The next day I was still working nearby so I grabbed another Philly. Also delicious! This time it was a different set of young ladies and they too were pleasant to deal with. I forgot my pink lemonade that I paid for and when I returned hours later they didn’t hesitate to make sure I received another lemonade.
