It is an old school family diner kind of vibe.
The food is GOOD. Ibrecommend the ponyshoe as there was enough food for an army. Not sure how someone could eat the whole horseshoe 🙂
Ask for potato skins instead of fries for your horse shoe or pony shoe. So good!
Pies are good.
Friendlyb taff.

Had the beefsteak, which was good. I did t like the coleslaw because it had too much mayo. The applesauce tasted like it came from a tin can. It was better once we I added cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. They were great about accommodating for food allergies.

We arrived around 10:30 am for a late breakfast. The diner seemed normal enough. We each ordered two eggs with hash browns and bacon. When the plates arrived to our table we were appalled. The food was thrown onto the plates haphazardly, sloppy, and just piled on top of each other. My eggs were hanging over the edge of the plate and hit the table when the waitress set it down. I also found a little piece of sausage on my plate, which testifies to the same sloppiness that was on my plate occurring at the grille. My date’s eggs were so undercooked that the whites were running all over. Her bread was toasted, but mine looked like they pulled it out of the toaster early to speed up the order. I would give the food quality a 2 out of 10. When we mentioned it to the waitress, she indicated that the grill chef has been informed multiple times but doesn’t listen. The grill chef appeared to be the manager or owner as well, because she kept snapping at the waitresses. It is sad because this place could be great with a proper, qualified manager, but at the moment, it is a disaster. Until the manager/grill chef quits being a tyrant dictator and starts working with her waitresses on the team level, this place will never be anything but a greasy spoon. Quality of food preparation and presentation needs to become a priority over speedy service. I ended up getting the vomits later that day. I’m not saying it was the food, but I am highly suspicious.

I went here with my son and his family while visiting them from Colorado. Born and raised in Ohio, I’m still a Midwestern girl at heart and was craving a pork tenderloin sandwich, something that’s not common where I now live. The Plaza Cafe did not disappoint! The tenderloin was obviously hand cut and breaded, not pounded to oblivion like some and had just the right amount of breading. Perfectly fried and crispy and the meat was tender and juicy. It didn’t look that big when it arrived at our table but then I realized it was hidden by the fries! I managed to only eat half of it like my daughter-in-law predicted and the rest went home for my granddaughter! It was perfect and delicious and definitely satisfied my craving for some Midwestern comfort food! I’ll be going back next time I’m in Carlinville!

Food is usually very good with good service. This particular time, food was cold. They were busy, so it’s expected service would be a little slower, which is understandable. Cold food is not expected. Toast was even cold. However, as stated, there will always be days when things are like this, and overall, great place. So would definitely recommend and go back based on previous experiences.
