Despite the raving reviews, we were really disappointed with Captain’s Cove. Nice ambiance, and service was great (until the end, read on!). Michael was our server, excellent service, for the most part! We had minimal drinks, but they serve Saratoga bottled water, which was a definite plus!

First course was the crudo and Hamachi crisp. Both dishes were served within 2 minutes of ordering, so not “fresh, made to order.” The Hamachi crisp was delicious, the star of the evening. The crudo was served frigid (fresh fish has little taste when served ice box cold!), the fish pieces were obviously pre-cut, and served in a soup of soy/ponzu. Great dish concept, a better presentation would be not so cold fish pieces on a cold plate, same bowl of the sauce on the side to be used for dipping. As currently presented, the fish was almost tasteless, overwhelmed by the sauce. No bueno!

Round two was the fried oysters and the Kung Pao shishitos. The cornmeal batter on the oysters was overwhelming, again, rendering the oysters almost tasteless. The ratio of the oysters pieces was 75/25 batter to oyster. Use bigger oysters and a thinner batter! The shishito peppers were different, but good. Much thinner batter held up to the dipping sauce!

Third course featured the poke tuna and the crispy fish tacos. Both were good… the drawback on this course was the fries, it’s tasted like they added sugar to the spice mix on the fries, weird having “sweet” regular fries. We would have preferred traditional simple salt! We also had an order of the grilled broccolini … not cooked enough to cut with a knife, and all the added nuts could not be picked up with a fork… ended up being “finger food!” Interesting concept, doesn’t work in reality!

Back to the service component… Michael presented the bill to us while we were still finishing the third course…, we spent a lot of $$ there, and are great tippers! We did not appreciate being rushed at the end. It may have been his last table, but the restaurant was open for another hour! (We were finished at 7:30pm on a Saturday night!).

So, for all the online hype, we were disappointed for the reasons outlined above. Not sure we’ll go back, so many other places to eat on SPI. Cannot recommend Captain’s Cove!

Pro-tip – make reservations – especially Saturday night.
While waiting for a table – we sat in the bar area. Mando was absolutely amazing. If only people realized they can make or break an experience. He was absolutely delightful and took care of us.

Then we were moved to our table where we had four people try and take care of us – even the manager- with no success. Sat with empty water glasses most of the time.
Food was ok.
Smallest oysters I’ve ever had.
Medium rare wagyu burger was cooked medium/well.
Fries good.
Great wine selection.
Beautifully decorated.

We had an absolutely lovely experience here – granted it was the off season, but everything was delightful and no wait or crowds. The staff were wonderful and friendly, knowledgeable about the menu and very on top of the service. The atmosphere was beautiful and decor was great, loved the oyster shell and starfish Christmas trees. We got the most perfect sunset over the water and ideal 70° evening weather on their deck. Food was delicious, we enjoyed oysters, risotto with shrimp, and the redfish on the half shell. Really enjoyed this spot!

After day two in SPI I was on the hunt for a good, non-fried food restaurant! We hit a gem here! The lobster gnocchi was by far the hit at the table. Id recommend getting the waygu and gnocchi – dip that steak in the lobster gnocchi sauce! You will thank me!

Lobster Gnocchi, waygu strip, salmon, calamari & octopus

We made it just in time for an incredible sunset!

Super service, very high quality food, good value for money. Tuna taco was awesome as the lobster roll. Minor room for improvement: dishes should be removes before serving the next dishes. Oysters were a bit small but very tasty. Best place in town!

This restaurant is beautiful! The atmosphere was perfect for a quick lunch to or from a day at the beach or an evening date. We ordered Grilled Salmon and Jumbo sea scallops. Also, had a delicious cocktail called Topic Like it’s Hot. The food was amazing, however the portion on the scallops was underwhelming. They were 3 scallops atop some creamed spinach and puree. They were delicious however for $45 it was disappointing to leave still hungry. It was basically an appetizer for 1. The Grilled Salmon on the other hand! WOW! Probably one of the BEST grilled salmon I have ever had! It was a perfect portion size, filling and reasonably priced. Would go back and recommend!

New Fav restaurant at SPI! We’ve been coming to the island for 30 years and it’s rare for a new place to stand out from the crowd – but wow, just wow – we loved Captain’s Cove! We are not oyster fans, so don’t let the name deter you if you don’t like oysters either! Lots of other good options on the menu.

The wine list is simple but delightful and fairly priced. We had a bottle of the Bodega Albariño and it was delightful!

We ordered the Salmon and the Fish Tacos and enjoyed both but the tacos were our fav! We ordered the homemade chips with it – they were great.

The crème brûlée was perfect – just the right amount of warm and cold!

The ambiance is wonderful- light, bright and nautical!

Service was attentive!

So happy to have this new option at SPI – we will be back!!
