A Delectable Feast from the Ocean
If you’re searching for a meal that truly celebrates the bounty of the sea, look no further than a perfectly crafted seafood platter. Recently, I had the pleasure of enjoying a seafood platter that surpassed all expectations and set a new standard for freshness, variety, and flavor.

The platter arrived beautifully arranged, with an enticing selection that included succulent shrimp, crispy clams, flaky fried haddock, and sweet scallops. The presentation made this dish as delightful to look at as it was to eat.

Every item on the platter radiated freshness. Notably, there was no trace of fishiness—just the clean, delicate flavors you’d expect from top-quality seafood. Each bite demonstrated that only the best ingredients had been chosen.

This seafood platter was a true celebration of the ocean’s gifts. Whether you’re a seafood aficionado or a newcomer to the genre, this platter will leave you savoring every last bite and planning your next visit. Highly recommended! From the minute we walked in the door our friendly bartender Danielle made us feel welcome and at home. We will be back!

I’ve seen many reviews and facebook posts about Captains Johns Seafood. The majority were really positive and was deeply disappointed when we had it today. Everyone raves about generous portions and fresh seafood. We got both saggy fried seafood and fries. The portions were small and skimpy…the most disappointing item was the coleslaw….it had an intense and obvious marijuana odor…they have to start vetting their staff…. overall was not satisfied and would not recommend.

Tried this place out on a work visit to Boston. Great little place. Had the seafood platter, which is recommended 100% and the seafood chowder. Seafood chowder was on point, the potatoes and seafood in it came out piping hot and full of flavors; salty, savory, not too thick just right. This is a must have when visiting. The chowder was chocked full of meat; chunks of fish, oysters, scallop and hearty chunks of potatoes The seafood platter was layered with fries then crispy fried fish and then surrounded with battered fried oysters, shrimps and scallops. One plate will feed two people. Also came with a side of homemade slaw which had just the right amount of sweetness to it. Just a side note, sodas are not free refill. Might be just that I’m from the south and am accustomed to free refills. Nevertheless, this seafood joint did its job, I left there with leftovers for late night snack. Thank you for a great first impression. Service was great for the most part, just once or twice had to wait a little bit for drink refills, but it’s all good. Parking is ample behind the restaurant in a big lot with paid parking through the passport parking app.

We got the fish and chips plus onion rings on top. I wanted to try out the onion rings since someone did a review that it was really good..but in my opinion it’s not that great. Their french fries were actually better than the onion rings. Their fish was definitely fresh and delicious. My daughter got the buffalo wings and she liked it. I’m not a fan of the sauce, so that was not my cup of tea. We did share the cheesecake and it was delicious as well.

Our group has been going here for 10 years. Once a month religiously. We just had lunch there. First of all, having Cheryl as a server is, in itself, the BEST! The place is a classic. Serving incredible FRESH fried seafood platters at rock bottom prices. I just had the best seafood chowder that I’ve ever had. Great drinks! Hometown crowd sets the stage in this no frills, fantastic place to be.

Forty or so bucks for a fisherman’s platter is not unreasonable, however although the food was excellent the portion sizes were not proportional to the price. The charges for tarter sauce were excessive. Although food was great we won’t be back. I do wish them the best. It’s a tough market but raising prices while reducing portions is not the way. I was also upcharged onion rings and I did not ask for it

I want to start off saying my 5 stars for the atmosphere is based on the local dive bar “townie” feel of this place which I love. Reminds me of the neighborhood places I hung out in back in my younger days growing up and living in the Somerville/ Everett/Malden area where you got to know everyone, especially the regulars, and met many “interesting” people. If you’re a pretentious snob, go find yourself an overpriced, overrated swanky place in a wealthy town somewhere.

That all being said, if you don’t mind a very casual bar atmosphere with tables covered with plastic disposable tablecloths and set with plastic-wrapped take-out flatware, and you like affordable great food (especially seafood) and don’t mind it being served in paper and foil lined red plastic baskets, and you like fantastic service, then run, don’t walk, to Captain John’s! It’s become a new favorite of my son and me. Had been wanting to try it for a long time and so on a whim on a Saturday night a little over a month ago we went after my son got out of work. Street parking only but we had no big issue finding a space. It was about 10:10pm when we arrived and I unfortunately didn’t realize the kitchen closed at 10:00, but the manager (I can’t remember her name) said she could make something fried for us. We ordered fish & chips and it did not disappoint. 2 huge pieces of fresh fish perfectly battered and cooked, generous portion of tasty french fries, and very tasty sweet cole slaw (I’m very particular about cole slaw and liked theirs). Food was delicious and well worth the money, but the manager going out of her way and serving us after the kitchen had closed was especially awesome.

A couple of weeks ago we returned, with one of my son’s friends along with us, for a birthday dinner for my son (this time within kitchen hours ). My son and I each got the Drunken Haddock (baked haddock with breadcrumb topping made with olive oil rather than butter, white wine and lemon) which was really good, he got fries and I got the rice which was a delicious, what I was told, Greek style rice cooked with a yummy spice blend, and we both had broccoli which was very tasty and cooked just right. My son’s friend had a medium rare burger which he said was very good. The same sweetheart manager served us (the restaurant side was very quiet at 8:30, almost 9:00 when we arrived but the bar side was hopping with football game watchers and regulars). I spoke with her on the sly and mentioned it was my son’s birthday so I’d like to add a slice of cake if they had it and sing Happy Birthday if at all possible. I understandably didn’t expect her to say yes but she said “I’ve got you.” Sure enough, after dinner she brought out a huge piece of delicious-looking chocolate cake with a lit candle and several people in the bar sang Happy Birthday to my son. And the nicest part is the cake slice was on the house. We stayed for a little while after we ate because they have an awesome karaoke host there on Saturday nights, really great guy.

Captain John’s will definitely now be a regular go-to for us. Apparently the place changed hands awhile back and was really popular under its original owners. Hopefully they will have continued success under the new owners. From my experience both times going there, I don’t see why they should not. I highly recommend them!

PS – Spotlessly clean ladies, something in my past experience is not typical in a bar. The state of a place’s bathroom is a good indicator of the state of the kitchen and rest of an establishment.

Amazing food. This braised lamb shank which was a special for the last two Wednesdays I’ve visited, belongs in a Michelin star restaurant. It could easily feed 2 people, and practically falls right off the bone. Also hugely piled seafood and amazing bacon wrapped scallops when they’re on the special. Extremely friendly service as well

Been wanting to go here a long time based on the reviews and pictures and was finally able to go on a Thursday night. Two sides, bar side and food side with large openings between. So if you’re going later in the evening you’re def gonna get some of the bar vibes which is great if that is what you are looking for. Food was as advertised. Really good fried and baked seafood. Batter on the fried is a light cornmeal batter that doesn’t take away but enhances the seafood. Salt on the table if you prefer more seasoning than the light seasoning they apply. Sides were good too. Really like the texture of the coleslaw which is a typical sweet mayo slaw. Onion rings also had a unique cut giving them a great texture too. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Fisherman platter will serve three people trust me!
