Flavor, finesse, and a new favorite in town.
We’re always on the hunt for spots that do less but do it better—and Canter nails it.
The menu may be minimal, but that’s a good sign: fresh ingredients, focused execution, and zero filler. We kicked things off with oysters and tartare—both bursting with flavor and plated with care. For mains, I went with the Sweet & Sour Pork short rib (tender, rich, and perfectly balanced), while my wife had the Skate Wing—delicate, buttery, and cooked to perfection.
The vibe? Warm, intimate, and full of character. Canter Inn is housed in a beautifully restored Victorian-style home in New Glarus, and the space blends historic charm with modern elegance. It’s the kind of place that feels special the moment you walk in.
Thrilled to have a restaurant of this caliber so close to home. We’ll be back. Often.

The wife and I took advantage of the Thanksgiving menu tonight, and we’re so glad we did. We started with the shrimp cocktail, then enjoyed sides of rice pilaf, spinach, milk bread, and mouth-watering sweet potatoes, all of which were absolutely delicious. The turkey was roasted to perfection, with generous portions all around. We’re locals and can’t say enough good things about the staff. If you’re in New Glarus, it’s well worth a stop.

Canter Inn is such an amazing addition to New Glarus! The restaurant is in an old restored home and they managed to make it warm and cozy while keeping the beautiful, original details. All of our food was awesome – we especially enjoyed the homemade rolls, rosti potato sticks, steak, and desserts. Lots of great mocktail options for those who don’t drink, too. Our server was wonderful. Thanks Canter Inn for giving my mother-in-law such a special birthday.

An absolutely wonderful place to spend an evening. Warm, comfortable, great music, and the most gracious, kind, and talented folks to complete the evening. Just had Wednesday night special of walleye fish fry, which included appetizer of pickled deviled eggs, and roesti(rosti) sticks, red cabbage, and old fashioned. They also made a wonderful pan seared Gluten free version of the walleye for my daughter. The affogato dessert was lovely. Will be back weekly. Thank you all!

We had an incredible meal at the Canter Inn on Friday night. The rosti sticks with fondue and beef tartare were standout starters. The pork shirt ribs with braised cabbage was seasoned beautifully and the perfect marriage of rich and bright flavors. The pork loin with old fashioned au poivre and pimento grits- the sauce and grits would taste excellent on just about anything, but the pork was cooked to perfection and paired beautifully. We had chocolate mousse pie for dessert, which somehow wasn’t too rich at the end of the meal, and the toasted coconut on top gave it a little texture and flavor boost.
The service we received was 10/10. Dining out with dietary restrictions can be tough, but the server made it so easy for me to find items on the menu that I could safely eat, and I was pleasantly surprised by how many items were already gluten free. I was impressed by how attentive the wait staff was. It was obvious they were doing everything they could to make sure each table was having an excellent experience. We cannot wait to introduce other people to this gem of a restaurant.

Thank you, Canter Inn, for a wonderful evening! The moment we stepped inside, we knew we were in for a treat! We were greeted by the bartender right when we opened the door, who offered us a seat and the drink menu. The Black Walnut Manhattan was delicious! Our table was in a sweet little corner of the busy restaurant, but it felt like we had privacy from the couple seated nearby. The waiter was incredibly pleasant and prompt with suggestions on the menu. Do not skip the Milk Bread!!! It was freshly baked and AMAZING! We ordered the Rosti Sticks as well (something we felt we must do when in New Glarus…). We also shared the Sweet & Sour Pork Short Ribs that were cooked to perfection, along with the Pork Chop that was perfect! We really enjoyed our experience and can’t wait to go back to try the rest of the menu! Nice work Canter Inn!

Canter Inn is a beautiful old house converted into a restaurant. Classy and beautifully done. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The staff was attentive and friendly. Meals are ala carte. Salad and bread are extra and priced separately, so that threw us a little. Plan on spending more, but it is a treat and well worth it. We will be back!

You know a restaurant experience is really something special when you wake up the next day and just want to go back for more… Immediately. ❤️
I celebrated my 51st birthday here on Friday night, and it was so fantastic!!! They even made me a cute birthday card!!!
My only constructive criticism is that the eating utensils were rather massive. But I’m very picky…
They did find me a smaller spoon though, so all was well!
I am so grateful to have this amazing restaurant right down the street, and we can’t wait to go back!!!
All of it was incredible. Staff, food, vibe…
Thank you Canter Inn! Keep rocking!!!
But seriously y’all. Go. ❤️

We celebrated my birthday dinner at Cantor Inn, and as someone who has high expectations for service, design, and cuisine, Cantor Inn exceeded them all. The experience was as dreamy as I had hoped while all being more than reasonably priced. It was refreshing, enjoyable, and luxurious on every level. The service was cheerful, knowledgeable, and genuine. We sat at a table for two, but the bar had an intimate, classy, old-world charm. I didn’t want to leave. Worth the trip and return visits.

Wow. Just wow. Went here about a week ago to celebrate my birthday. We went pretty hard for the birthday and ordered quite a bit. As an industry pro I rarely go through that many dishes anywhere and like them all. Everything slapped. The service, drinks, and food were all outstanding. I don’t eat much red meat anymore but I had a couple bites of my spouse’s steak and that was some of the best steak bites I’ve ever had. It goes to eleven!
